Binaural recording is the process of capturing audio using two microphones that are shaped like human ears. Binaural microphones capture audio the same way your real ears hear sounds.  The ears (pinnae) dramatically alter the incoming sound waves, but our brains understand these alterations as directional cues.  In addition, the time delay between the ears gives us proper left/right directional cues.

When you listen to binaural recordings using headphones, the result is a natural three-dimensional sound that gives the listener the sensation of being in the space where the audio was recorded.

The Free Space has a stereo 1/8" jack for mobile recording. Simply plug it in to your favorite stereo pre-amp, and start recording 100% pure binaural audio! The Free Space delivers a very sensitive and natural binaural recording. In many cases, you will not even want to, or need to edit the final recording. The low noise floor results in a very open and dynamic binaural realism, especially during very delicate recordings. The quiet 'openness' of the Pro is great for nature binaural recording as well.

The Free Space has a very warm and solid response in the low to mid frequency range. This brings out the punch, as well as low end for bass-heavy sounds. The frequency response of the microphone capsules roll off a bit above 10kHz. This is excellent for recording instruments with loud higher frequencies like drum cymbals or strummed acoustic guitars. It also prevents any 'harsh' effects that are sometimes associated with binaural recording with smaller capsules.
