hi guys! this is my blog for the #SotwChallenge for Closer Than This by Jimin, which i’ve decided to look deeper into and appreciate his gift to ARMY! i hope you enjoy it! :two_hearts:

the best way i can begin to describe this song is that it’s like receiving a warm hug from Jimin. in what was meant for ARMY, when i hear it, it’s like i’m instantly transported back to the early days of stanning BTS. i would call Closer Than This much more than a song, but a poetic love letter, which Jimin has never not shown his love and unwavering bond with the fans. when i listen to this song, it fills me with hope and nostalgia. that no matter where Jimin, or any of BTS, or ARMY are in the world, he’s left a lasting presence.

we all know that this was a gift for ARMY that Jimin left before he left for his mandatory military service. however, there’s a lot of references in the lyrics that go back the last few years and i thought it’d be nice to really think about and understand them. :purple_heart:

[verse 1 :cloud: ]

with BTS debuting on June 13, 2013, it was the first time they had ever come face to face with their fans that ed them, which they would later decide to call ARMY. from their very first fan meeting where they were just babies with only 32 fans in attendance. from a small fan meeting to dominating Billboard charts, BTS have definitely come such a long way. as Jimin describes it, it came an went in a “blink of an eye.”

there have been many instances where Jimin and also ARMY have comforted each other simultaneously, whether it was on Vlive/Weverse, or ending speeches such as during their live concert, Map of the Soul ON:E. Jimin has never been one that hesitated to lean on ARMY, just like we leaned on him. he recalls these times in his lyrics.

with these lyrics, Jimin offers reassuring words for all of ARMY as they head off to the military. a comma indicates a pause in grammar, whereas a period indicates a full stop. with Jimin saying that this is only a small comma in this story, he’s saying that this journey with BTS isn’t ending yet. it’s a short time away, but the rest of the journey will continue once they return. the purple sea will be once more.

Jimin decides to strip it back with a simple chorus, but it tugs at your heartstrings nonetheless. it’s probably pretty self-explanatory, but he’s reassuring ARMY that he’ll always be around and will be thinking of them constantly. he’s telling us to just believe him and that everything will be okay.

[verse 2 :cloud: ]

many memories had been made throughout the years during concerts, which Jimin hints back to during these lyrics. they’ve had bad rain shows in the past and even some that had been snowing, but not once had they let that get them down. he’s describing that even when normal phenomenons occur, he has some way to connect it back to ARMY. he also references Spring Day, which ARMY always go back to listen to during these times.

seven equals one. with one member of BTS missing, it isn’t BTS. they’re a team. so when they all return, BTS will finally be back.

finally, Jimin is near finished with this song where he gives ARMY hope for the future of BTS. after the comma, the rest of the sentence will be finished and all of the boys will return back to us to finish what they’ve started. he knows they won’t be finished any time soon and he wanted ARMY to know that as well.
