Cut Out Skull Shirt :skull: [How-To] [Deg] Tutorial

I stayed up making this the night before Halloween so that I’d have some cute pjs to wear. I already had some awesome zombie skull pants from Peter Alexander, so I needed a shirt to wear with them.

I got the original idea from an image that I saw online at: Random Girl 11: MaiSelenatica - Deviantart

My Cut-Out Skull Shirt

After that I searched for a skull template that I liked. I found mine at: DIY Skull t-shirt: Shannon - Dainty Dream and while I was searching on google images it actually lead me to a how-to blog which I recommend checking out if you want to recreate this.

For the front of the shirt I spliced together two photos: Kisspng for the skull, and Photobucket for the crossbones

HOW-TO:

I won’t go too in depth here as there is a blog attached that explains each step HERE . However I thought I’d outline some changes, and bits I felt were missed.

This is a very easy project, just a little time consuming.

You Will Need:

- A t-shirt (mine was about AUD$12)

- A printer/paper

- Scissors

- X-acto knife (optional) (I only used it to cut

                                            out the teeth on the

                                           paper).

- Fabric Scissors

- Cutting Mat (optional/will need if using x-acto

                          knife)

- Fine Tip Marker

- Sticky Tape (to attach the sheets of my

                         template)

Sizing Template:

I used an Australian size 6 long t-shirt and this is the size I made my templates for reference:

Marking Onto Shirt:

(I have a cutting mat inside the shirt so that the pen wouldn’t transfer and there was no way of accidentally cutting through the front of the shirt)

FRONT OF SHIRT:

You Will Need:

- Printer

- Reynolds Freezer Paper (you can use another

                                             paper that the paint

                                             won’t bleed through)

- X-acto Knife & Cutting Mat

- Iron & Ironing Board

- Fabric Paint

- Sponge Brush

- Tweezers

- Ruler & Pen

Altering Image:

This image is spliced together on photoshop using the images HERE and HERE. I really liked the skull, however I wanted some crossbones. Since I’m not great at drawing I spliced these two photos together. I also used the bone on the bottom left, and mirrored it for the bottom right, as it fit the new skull better this way.

Sizing Template:

I only wanted something small in the top corner of my shirt, just so that it wasn’t a blank tee on the front.

How it was set out and positioned:

(So the black lines are the edges of the photo)

I then measured the size of the rectangle and measured it out onto some spare paper, cut it out and positioned it on my shirt to check the size.

Template guide

When I needed to resize it to get the right fit, I changed the size on the computer and repeated this step. (When doing this to enlarge the page to the same size as the printer paper so that you have a 1:1 ratio. I had mine set at 107%)

Making the Template:

I then printed it out straight onto Reynolds Freezer Paper.

I then labeled each section with an arrow facing up ( :top: ), an (L) for Left, (R) for Right or a (T) for Top or (B) for Bottom.

Carefully cut out the image using an x-acto knife. This is where you want to decide if you’re going to paint the outline or invert it, so you know what pieces to keep.

(I decided to paint the outline, keeping my skull white with a black outline. This means that I want to keep all of the white sections).

Otherwise keep the black sections and add a boarder.

Without the boarder

Because I used Reynolds Freezer Paper I was able to iron my stencil onto the shirt.

I then place my cutting mat onto the table and laid my shirt on top of it. Inside of the shirt I placed an old magazine so that the paint wouldn’t bleed through onto the back of the shirt.

Using the sponge brush lightly dab over the stencil. Be carful as some of the smaller sections may lift up.

Lift off the template with tweezers while the paint is still wet and wait for it to dry.
