TRIGGER WARNING! mentions of anxiety and self destructive action (attempted suicide)

this is just my thoughts on this, and feel free to disagree. these are just purely my thoughts when listening to this song (Finale)

This song is so freaking amazing, but i cannot listen to it anymore or i will in fact cry.

now, onto what this is about.

this song is so uncomfortable but so sweet because it is the kind of closure we needed, but didn’t want. it wasn’t the happy sort.

it was a kid who has anxiety beyond control, had tried to kill himself the summer before, that had just gone through SO MUCH (yes i understand it was his fault, but it still was a difficult and challenging situation) saying “today is going to be a good day and here’s why. because today you’re you. and that’s enough.” and not just saying that for therapy, or to get it over with, actually MEANING to say he was enough, that today WOULD be a good day. that’s ASTONISHING. that is DEVELOPMENT. that is inspiring and motivational.

and no, it is not happy, but it is contentment. he has finally settled on who he is, knowing he can’t change it. and is it the happy ending we wanted him to have?

no, no it is not.

but it is the ending that most of us get. the end feeling of just being content. and no it isn’t the glorified ending that we expected and wanted, it isn’t him battling his demons and becoming the happiest man alive. it’s the truth.

and that’s what the musical was about.

truth.

And if we step back and look at it from a new angle, isn’t the realness of this musical what really took hold of us?

because even though it isn’t always pretty, it’s our reality.

and it was beautiful to watch the journey of someone discovering that.

thank you for your time.

During the DC run, they had the show end with "Let the world by for forever." But after seeing it in front of a live audience, they chose to end the show on a more hopeful note by having Evan say the line "All I see is sky for forever." They also debated on ending the show with a YWBF reprise, but decided against it after seeing the design concept for the final scene. Something that's not in the recording is this little speech Evan says during Finale, basically saying how he's gotten over his biggest fear: being forgotten. I think it's really beautiful and it gets me every time. :pensive:
