Sparky has so much potential in her endurance and I am so very excited to continue riding her on these beautiful rides.

She had many many issues in the beginning, but is now better than ever, so we are able to focus much more in endurance rather than fixing problems.

We aren’t super competitive when doing our rides. My main goal whenever we do endurance rides is to complete them, because I don’t want myself or sparky to get caught up in a competition and forget about the beauty and fun of endurance!

Sparky is quite uncomfortable to ride at times, but that’s only when she’s being silly and trying to go as fast as she wants during a ride. However, when I am firm and pick my battles, she listens, even though she makes her reluctance clear. She is slightly ignorant on the ground if she notices a distraction, is being impatient or is stressed. Sparky does not handle stress in the best ways, so I have to make sure when she’s stressed I do not let it make me stressed too, because that just creates a giant stress cycle.

If she knows you’re the leader and you’ll make her feel safer, she’s focused and careful. Sparky does not agree with force. I always make sure I talk her through things that she doesn’t want to do, because that almost always seems to calm her down and make her understand that she can and should do what I’m asking.

Sparky is certainly an intelligent horse, but she does let that wit get the best of her when she‘s in the mood. I hate when she’s in the mood. She never listens and sometimes when she doesn’t listen I just can’t get through to her and it just becomes a matter of restricting her to stay safe, which I also hate.

Sparky is a very athletic horse who adores being out on trail. She really hates working in the arena, however I still use arena work to maintain her suppleness as this is extremely important for her. Whenever we’re out on trail, her ears are pricked up for the entire ride; sparky constantly has something to look at. Although when there’s another horse in front; Sparky hates it. She hates stuck behind other horses and just wants to pick her own pace rather than follow. However, I never allow sparky to pick her own pace if it’s not an appropriate one. This is usually where things get iffy at endurance rides, because sparky has so much energy she wants to use it all at once and race other horses.

Sparky has the cutest little pink snip, even though it gets sunburnt like every pink snoz does.

Sparky’s tail is beautifully thick and has such perfect length. It’s not too close to the ground as well as being nice and long. And the way she carries her lovely tail just makes it tens times more pretty.

The white spots on sparky’s back are adorable. They split her apart from all the other bays. I also just adore how they look against her red bay coat.

Sparky has such a beautiful face. Her ears are so adorably tiny and her stripe is just pitch perfect with the soft arab dish she has.

Sparky has an astonishing Arab trot. The way her legs stretch forward with such control and strength, then graciously flex back to prepare for a repeat is amazing! Fun fact, the anatomy of Arabian horses allows them to reach past their forelimbs with their hind feet when trotting, meaning they can do an extra long extended trot! In endurance, it is extremely important that the horse can control their muscles and distribute their strength through a variety of gaits, the most important being extended trot.

Sparky is so good to work with in he arena. She holds her frame so pretty and carries herself very well. She lifts her back nicely to carry me when she’s in frame, I can feel it so distinctly. Her suppleness is wonderful, she is so flexible.

Although sparky has the potential to carry herself in an absolutely beautiful frame, she sometimes just ignores the aids for her frame and carries her head like it’s full of helium. I am constantly working on this during rides, and her head carriage has improved immensely. She still carries it pretty badly when I am holding her back from going too fast, but when she’s in the zone and moving smoothly it’s nice and low.

Sparky does not have very good canter transitions. I use all the aids I can, but she is so sensitive to my leg and seat that she just gallops off whenever I ask. She does actually do nice transitions to canter when on the trail, but in the arena they can be horrendous. Once again, that’s something I’m working on with her.
