Random accompanying rant ahead.
I can’t put my finger on why, but I love the book 4 OCs so much even though I feel like the story itself was very mediocre. Part of it is the beautiful flower aesthetic. I think more of it though, was that they’re children who have had their futures destroyed and who chose to throw away what little remained to forever serve these random gods’ whims...and you’re getting a chance to change their fate, to teach them new skills and give them more purpose than the one thing their lives were saved for them to do.
Plumeria especially — mostly because she’s got the most in-depth backstory. I wish everyone else got one too, Peony and Triandra’s needs a lot more explanation and Mirabilis got nothing at all. But all the subtle details about how Plumeria’s story affects her personality are so amazing — the way she’s learned to blame everything (like bad level up luck) on mortals’ horrid tastes, the way she’s abnormally anxious about everyone’s reactions, and the heart melting way she reacts to a bit of kindness. And all while struggling with the belief that she herself was too disgusting to be loved. With the difference between her mythic and New Years unit quotes, it’s...almost fun to watch her grow and heal, just a bit.
Peony, on the other hand, is the happy inhabitant of a wacky world and her positivity is really cute sometimes. And that reality check she gets from Triandra during their NY paralogue was so wholesome I think I cried a bit...
Meanwhile Mirabilis is just a fun unit to use. She looks really pretty too, and the nap thing is quirky in the same way Bernie is. My main opinion of Triandra though is that her voice sounds robotic. There’s so little of her character developed I really don’t have an opinion of her.
And Freyja...I debated whether or not to tell this story, but since people aren’t probably reading all the way through the end of this rant here goes nothing. during the month where the story had her take over reality, I was suffering from brief psychotic disorder. Had a tiny bit of a relapse when the last chapter came out. And because schizo logic just works like this, it felt so much like Freyja herself was my psychosis, my nightmare. it’s seriously haunting, part of you believes that you’re a fictional character as much as it does that the table in front of you is solid and you have no way to stop it. I never let myself completely believe that, but...idk, it’s kinda fun and meaningful in a weird way to have her. if I end up on meds later though y’all know who to kill

I mean, I can see how her “ew mortals” thing can get annoying, and I especially hate the bit of seductiveness they built into her anyways, as if implying she actually loves seeing mortals’ dreams. Her attachment to Kiran can go either way too I guess
