This is a festival celebrating the accesion ceremony day held in 781 of Emperor Kanmu of Nara who is the diety of the shrine.

This festival is celebrated on April 15 and 16. The festival features an opportunity to see Geiko and Maiko with their apprentices.

What is the difference between Geisha and Geiko?

The only difference between them is where they come from.

They are called Geiko in Kyoto, whilst in Tokyo they are called Geisha.

The Maikos are apprentices of a Geiko.

The related prayer ceremony is held on this day.

On April 16

Various ceremonies will be held including a traditional Japanese mini concert, dances by Maiko and Geiko from 4 Kagai districts and tea offering ceremony to the diety.

Brief Information about the History of the Heian Shrine

Dating from only 1895 CE, The Shrine was built to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of the founding of Kyoto.

It is also a replica of Japan's first Imperial Palace.
