You guys. We all have seen it. In
Korean dramas.They talk about
take out and then they're eating
from a bowl of noodles with black
sauce. It's Jajangmyeon and they
make it look...
So...

Damn...

Good.

But what does it taste like?
I NEED TO KNOW.

So after years and years of watching
Korean dramas I decided to go on a
mission to try some.
And when I say mission I mean I
Google searched where to find
some in my area.

I found one place and the reviews
seemed great. It was a food stall
that was inside a Korean Market.
So off I went dragging a couple
friends along with me.
Wait, wait, wait, does everyone know
what Jajangmyeon is?

In case you don't know it is a Korean
Chinese noodle dish made with black
bean sauce, pork and veggies.
Ok let's continue. So in dramas I usually
see these noodles paired together with
tangsuyuk which is sweet and sour pork
(or beef). Which is also something I got
to eat for the first time.

So what did I think of it?
(Actual mouth watering footage ahead.)

It was pretty good. I can't exactly explain
the taste of it but it was a lot more milder
then I expected. First bite I actually felt
like it didn't have much of a flavor.

My friend compared it to bbq sauce which
I definitely did not agree on. The food stall
makes the noodles fresh daily. I expected
the noodles to be a bit more firm like udon
but they actually softer. The noodles were
actually comparable to thick ramen noodles,
not the instant stuff, but real ramen noodles.
I really like the pickled radish that you eat
along with it. The food stall had a container
next to where you pick up your order to load
up on the yellow slices. In between bites of
the thick sauce and noodles the radish are a
clean refreshing crunch.

How about the tangsuyuk?

The tangsuyuk surprised me a bit. I'm
not sure if they're all made like this
but the batter is different from what I
expected. The outside texture is like an
edible styrofoam if that makes sense.
The real question though is if I dipped
it in sauce or poured the sauce over.

I wanted to try both ways so I poured the
sauce over half and dipped a few in sauce.
Which one did I like better in the end? The
pour sauce took the win. I feel like when I
poured the sauce over the pork it really
soaked up the flavor.

Overall
I wouldn't mind eating it again. Although at
this point it doesn't seem like something I
would crave out of the blue. I can see why
it could be a comfort food though.
It's definitely nice to finally get the
curiosity out of my head. Now I can
finally sleep peacefully at night.

Have you tried Jajangmyeon?
What did you think?

I’ve eaten jajangmyeon with chicken instead as I’m a Muslim and.....I WAS BLOWN AWAY BOI DID IT TASTE GOOD but at first it seemed kinda gross but then....came the first bite/slurp and instead of pickled radish we had fresh sliced cucumbers topped with sesame seeds and some chicken bits and I melted in my seat with all that flavour
If I eat some, then I have to switch the pork with chicken.
