Hey there, everyone! Eli here! It’s honestly hard for me to come up with anything witty to say when I’m so busy being baffled by the fact that 2025 is progressing at the speed of a freight train. But at least Mario is there with us to help keep us cheerful company this month, which is quite nice.
So when it comes to character interpretations, most of us know how to have a good time with that. Sometimes we try to explain things we see in canon and sometimes we pin a list of 95 things we disagree with canon on to its door. Though video games don’t have enough social influence to trigger a religious reformation (yet), we at least have a lot of fun with comparing and contrasting.
However, today is gonna be all about finding what we enjoy even when canon doesn’t feed us well. It’s not terribly uncommon for people to find a reason to love a character even they disagree with the story that was told for them, and they’ll often be fished out of their environment in an effort to truly harness their full potential. Creative souls tend to have a lot of ideas for how to bring characters to life, even if they’re going against the creators’ initial wishes.
With all of that said, this week’s question is…
Who is a character that you love, but hate the lore for?
For me personally, I honestly really dislike how Pauline is treated by the lore, even though I like her. People get onto Peach for being kidnapped a lot, but that was literally Pauline’s only job until Odyssey, and it’s only recently that sports and kart games are starting to give her some time to shine. Even with her glowup in Odyssey though, part of me always got this vibe that she was only there for a bit, which was disappointing because I think she has a lot of potential and could be used in other ways.
But what about the rest of you guys? We all have some characters we love, even if we don’t think canon shows them off in the best way. Waluigi not being Wario’s brother - and further, Wario and Waluigi not being Mario and Luigi’s cousins.
The Koopalings. In Super Mario Bros 3, it was said that they were Bowser’s children, but ever since Bowser Jr. was created, that seems to have been retconned. I still headcannon them as Bowser’s children, because it doesn’t make as much sense for Bowser to have 7 young minions that kinda look like him and are distinct from regular Koopas but are not in any way related to him.
That’s been retconned? I thought they were his adopted children,which is why he favors Jr.
If it has been retconned then I guess also the koopalings.
Bowser. So overlooked by Mario fans as a whole for being the "bad guy." Nobody gives him room for nuance or character development because he has to be the silly yet unredeemable villain, right?
In fact, I fell into this trap myself when initially adding Bowser to my Mario AU. He was one-dimensional and had little reason to exist outside of kidnapping Peach. But now, I have given him an actual storyline, a motivation, and purpose.
Side note: Bowser is far from a favourite character for me (I dont hate him though). I could argue the Shroobs are a better answer for this question but I've grown to like Bowser's role in my AU so 🤷♀

Huh that's actually pretty neat! Tbh I delegated the "he kinda just exists lol" role to Midbus because the events of BIS dont really change in my AU - but it is motivated by Fawful's disdain for his mother.
