Marinette sat next to the paned window. Or what was left of one. It was one of few in the bunker that hadn’t completely caved in. Some of the glass panes had broken, moss and vines reclaiming the frames and surrounding walls; a classic display of mother nature’s resilience.

It was picturesque really - straight out of a fairytale - at least, it would have been, if it weren’t for the raging storm thrashing the flora around outside.

The window was somewhat shaped like a bay window - probably what was once used as a lookout to alert soldiers of incoming attackers, now served as a pretty good view for Marinette as she contemplated what her next course of action should be.

She felt sick. Betraying her family. That’s a true low. She had only a few days to commit to her decision and let Adrien live, or arrive back home with his slaughtered heart in her hand. She found herself picking at her stitches, reopening the nasty gash on her forehead a little. Marinette pulled her hand away and observed the fresh blood on her fingertips.

“Marinette? What are you doing here? You’ll catch a cold.” Tikki’s voice rang from behind her.

Marinette shrugged. Her throat was dry.

“How’s Adrien?”

Marinette shrugged again.

“Have you made a decision?”

“Tikki!” Marinette burst, whipping her head around in exasperation. She didn’t know why she was shouting.

Tikki’s eyes were wide and the blue-nette slumped back against the wall, eyes drifting back to the window. “Sorry,” she whispered hoarsely.

“It’s okay,” Tikkie muttered.

“So,” Marinette grimaced, “How’d the interrogation with Plagg go?”

Tikki didn’t reply straight away. “O-oh um…”

“Do you know him or something?” The young assassin turned her gaze to Tikki and studied her reaction. “Don’t play dumb with me, I’m not dense,” Marinette mumbled.

“He recognised you. And you him. That was weird…” She found herself cringing, ing the familiar way Plagg had gazed at Tikki the other day.

“Okay, it’s true,” Tikki finally conceded. “I do know him… We met a little while before the The Great Sunder. I suppose no one’s told you why the families split.”

Marinette sucked in a small breath, ears ringing. The Great Sunder was, for some reason, a big taboo topic in the family, even just making a ing comment of it was frowned upon. For most of Marinette’s life, she’s been trying to sleuth out what happened that fateful day, and finally, someone was going to tell her.

Her friend sighed. “Plagg was working for Hawkmoth, as he is now. But our mafias came to a truce of sorts. In order to recover an ancient treasure, an agreement was made and our two families ed as one to work together. You see, there are certain bloodlines that have an… ethereal connection to this treasure.”

Marinette was at full attention now, eyes trained on Tikki. “Like what?”

“Like… the treasure only responds to a person of that bloodline. Without such a person, the item becomes ineffective.”

“Lucky person,” Marinette’s eyes sparkled.

Tikki smiled sadly. “Perhaps closer to a curse. That person is merely a guardian of the item; we refer to them as Kwamis. They can’t use the item for themself, they can only give their blessing to someone else to use it.”

Marinette pulled a face. “So… anyone could use its power? As long as they’ve been given that pers- that- kwami’s blessing?”

“Basically,” Tikki nodded. “Each item…” The red-head hesitated as if what she was about to say something she shouldn’t. “Each item is known as a Miraculous. And each Miraculous has their own respective Kwami that unlocks its potential. The two most powerful Miraculous is the ladybug Miraculous, possessing the power of creation, and the cat Miraculous, possessing the power of destruction.”

Marinette gasped, “Master Fu’s playing cards…”

Tikki smiled. “Since the treasure was protected by ancient divine magic, the families needed both the Cat and Ladybug Kwami in order to find and work it. Plus, whatever other Kwamis they could find. The Chinese mafia already had the Ladybug Kwami, and the French had the Cat.”

The girl’s eyes grew dark as she said this and Marinette bit her lip. “We have a Kwami in our family? Who?”

Tikki looked at her, her gaze saying more than words ever could and finally, realisation dawned on Marinette. Tikki was one of the few who was actually present at the time of The Great Sunder and there was a reason for that. She released a breath, “You’re the Ladybug Kwami?”

Her friend nodded solemnly. “And Plagg’s the Kwami of the Cat.”

Marinette felt betrayed almost. “How come… nobody ever told me this? How come you never told me that?”

“It’s dangerous knowledge, Marinette.” Tikki shook her head. “Your parents wanted to keep you and everyone else in the family, safe, but especially you, Marinette.”

“So wait, ok.” Marinette shook her head in disbelief. “What happened then? Did you guys find the Miraculous?”

“Yeah. We did. That’s when it all went to hell. You see, legend is that when the Cat and Ladybug Miraculous is used together, a wish can be made; any wish. It comes with a price, however. You wish to revive someone from death? Someone else must take their place.”

“A trade,” Marinette muttered.

“The two families couldn’t agree on who got what and who got to make the wish; if it should be made at all, that is. Half of us argued, a wish should never be made because the consequences weren’t worth the risk. The rest demanded that they deserved to make the wish. And, the cave we found them in - it was on OUR turf - but the land, well we live in , so of course the French said it was rightfully theirs. A fight broke out, inevitably.

“Hawkmoth’s wife - Adrien’s mother - she was killed in the frey. Out of everyone, she didn’t deserve such a fate. She was a genuinely kind person.” Tikki’s face was painted with sadness as the memories resurfaced.

“In the end, we returned with the Ladybug Miraculous. The Bee, Fox and Turtle Miraculous was ours. The Miraculous of the Peacock and Butterfly, however, were taken by the French.”

“And the Cat’s?” Marinette raised her brow.

“I gave it to Plagg.”

“So the French mafia has it?”

“No,” Tikki shook her head. “He never told them he had it. They believe we have it.”

“Is that why they’ve been targeting us? Because they think we have the Cat Miraculous? Why wouldn’t Plagg tell them?”

“Not exactly. Partly because of the uneven distribution of the Miraculous, yes. But also because of what happened to Emily. The French blame us for killing her, at least Hawkmoth does and he’s a bitter, vengeful man. If Plagg had told him that he had the Cat Miraculous? Hawkmoth would have used it to wipe out our entire army, overnight.”

The young girl didn’t know what to say.

Tikki went on, eyebrows bunching. “I couldn’t keep the Cat Miraculous. Plagg is the rightful owner of it, and since we have the Ladybug Miraculous, they’re just too dangerous to keep together. They needed to stay separated.”

“So,” Marinette’s brain was trying to keep up with all this new information. “Where is the Ladybug Miraculous now?”

Tikki smiled a little. “The items are disguised as jewellery so as to not draw attention if someone were to where them in the outside world. The Cat’s is a ring, the Ladybug’s, a pair of earrings. As you can imagine, such a power, I have to be careful to whom I give that too. Someone I could trust, and when it comes down to it, a person who listens to her heart and makes the right decision when it counts.”

“What do you mean? Stop being vague, Tikki.” Marinette could feel her heart rising through her throat in anticipation.

“Marinette, you’re a strong fighter. Agile, crafty, intelligent. Severely loyal to your family. You have a sharp mind, but… you’re also kind. You’re grounded.”

Marinette could hear her heart beating in her ears, chest pounding. She shook her head. “N-no, I…”

“I wasn’t going to tell you until I was absolutely sure, when push comes to shove, you trust your own instincts and morals, above anyone else’s. When you spared Adrien’s life? Marinette, no one else in the Mafia is dumb enough to do that. Listen to moral over duty?”

The girl cringed, “Sorry…”

“No,” Tikkie shook her head. “I’m so… incredibly proud of you.”

Marinette’s hand shot up to her ears as she recalled Plagg’s comment about them. “Plagg said my earrings were pretty…”

“Yes, Marinette.” Tikki chuckled. “And I gave them to you because I trusted in your ability. And I know now I can trust in your judgement.”

Marinette’s mouth was gaping open in shock. She didn’t know what to say. Excitement, fear, curiosity; they all tumbled around in her stomach; a million thoughts rushing through her head.

“Close your jaw before you catch a fly,” Tikki laughed.

“I’m chill,” Marinette said as an attempt to seem non-chalant, struggling to wipe the amazement off her face. Tikki rolled her eyes.

“Does mum know?”

“Sabine?” Tikki smiled, “Yes, of course. We both agreed on your potential, plus she wanted you to have it. To protect yourself when the time came.”

“Wait, but I don’t even know how to use it?”

“That’s why I’m going to teach you… AFTER the party, of course.” Tikki winked, “I have a handsome suit picked out for Adrien and I’ve already ordered your dress. I’ll need his measurements, however.”

Marinette beamed. “You… are full of surprises, Tikki.”

They sat in silence for a bit. Listening to the rain. It wasn’t as angry as it was before. More now, a light shower, the fresh droplets pitter-pattering on the window pains and sliding down their glossy surface. She watched as they trickled down. The earthy rich smell of clean rain and forest filled the air.

“Thanks for,” Marinette found herself speaking quietly, a little sheepish in her tone. “You know… for believing in me.”

Tikki pulled Marinette into a tight embrace. “I love you, Marinette. I will always have your back.”

Marinette’s eyes brimmed with tears. It was not often she heard those words, and in Tikki’s arms, she felt safer than she did with her own mother. As ironic as it sounds, it was always the gentle things that, in the end, made Marinette’s stoic heart begin to shake. She could get beaten and bruised by loan sharks all day and not shed a single tear, but the second someone shows her a slither of genuine affection? She feels herself becoming a blubbery mess.

Marinette sniffled and forced a pout as she pushed her friend away softly, “Go away, Tikki. You interrupted my wallowing.”

“My bad,” Tikki shrugged, giggling. She got up, her skirt elegantly swishing around her. Leave it to Tikki to always be the most fashionable, well-kept person in any room. “Don’t stay up too late now.”

“Yes mum,” Marinette teased.

The sick feeling from earlier had subsided and was replaced with a warmth in the core of her chest. She leant her head back against the wall and salvaged the feeling.

Summary: Tikki reveals the truth about the Mafia’s history and feud to Marinette, telling her about the existence of the Miraculous and the Kwamis, revealing to Marinette that she is the Kwami or creation, and Plagg the Kwami of destruction (and that she, Marinette, is the current holder of the Ladybug Miraculous).
