The Most Important Role.

There are 3 main roles in Overwatch.

DPS, Tanks, and s.

Now, all of these roles provide vital, key elements to the team. If a team were to lack in one of these elements, (EX: There are no Tanks) then you are destined to fail.

But ever since I started to play this game, I've been thinking to myself, which role is the best?

Sure, all roles are unique and different, but does one role outshine another role? Or does one role lack short due to another being better?

How about we break this topic down.

The DPS Role.

Ah, yes. The gods themselves. Jesus walked on water, Euna created the best Amino ever (Too soon?), but DPS won wars. It's a very simple concept to grasp, but it's commonly known that DPS is a universal role to main.

DPS, or Damage Per Second, is a role that revolves around (You guessed it!) dealing damage. These guys are basically the bread and butter of the team. They deal the damage, break the barriers, and make sure that you are constantly shoving a healing beam up their ass.

But there also multiple variations to the DPS role. There are Flankers, Snipers, Close Range, Long Range, there is no one specific DPS role that is the best. All of them play differently to different playstyles.

This is also the one role that I do not main, so I can't say too many opinions without sounding like a hypocrite. So let's move on to the next role.

Tanks

Easily my favorite and most respected role. If you main Tank, then I give a round of applause to you. There are the heroes that have GAME CHANGING ultimates, the DPS heroes which have so many more opportunities to have fun and dominate, while the Tank players are kind of left in the dust.

Does it mean they're any less important? No! These guys job is to protect the team. They are literally made to die for the team. That is their goal, and I respect that. They defend the s, protect the DPS, and hold their ground.

These guys give up the power of a DPS or to protect the team. They never get thanked, they never spam for healing, and they just try their hardest to win. Unless you're a D.va or Winston main, then you don't try to protect your team. But they still try to win without complaining!

I refer to these guys as the "Unthanked MVPs". As an Ana main myself, I love seeing a dedicated Tank main. Even if it's one trick, not going to prevent me from being extremely happy. You can ask anyone, I have a tremendously deep voice. But if I see a Reinhardt on my Team who doesn't spam "I need Healing!" and protects his team 24/7, I sound like a silly schoolgirl on helium.

s

Okay, let me clear up a misconception. You know how everyone goes around saying stuff like "Man, they're way too many DPS and Tank mains, I wish they were more s to help keep players alive!"

That's complete and utter bullshit.

I practically only ever see mains. Oh, and don't even get me started on the number of comics that say "Blah blah blah, I'm a main and my team never protect me", although they can never heal a Reinhardt to save their life. They're more tunnel vision than a free to play sniper in Team Fortress 2.

I am very salty.

But on the very rare occasion that you DO find a good , (Gale, Diamond, Tobi, etc...) you better protect their life with everything you have at your disposal. Because on your team, they may look like the modern day Jesus, but to the enemy, they might as well be a punching bag in a lab coat.

Protect your s, because chances are if you're nice to them, they will indeed keep you and everyone around you alive. And by the way, Mei's of the world, you guys are awesome. Keep freezing that "Pro Genji" and saving your s. You guys are epic.

What is the most important role?

Well, if you are smarter than the average bear, the answer is obvious.

None of them is the "Most Important Role".

The way Overwatch was engineered allowed for the game to be played multiple different ways with multiple different team comps. Much like how a Dive Comp doesn't need heals. And that is one of the beauties of Overwatch. Not one role is better than the other.

All roles are different and unique. Sure, in most or some comps, all three roles will be utilized in a coordinated push or team (EX: Reinhardt, Soldier, McCree, Orisa, Mercy, Ana). But it others, you don't even need a certain role. Because not one role outshines another.

They're all equal.

So my question is:

do i classify as a tank main, if I suck at winton, reinhardt and am barely capable of doing something with orisa and roadhog BUT my number one main is D.va and I am pretty good with her?

Then you're a flex hero. But if you can only play D.va, then you are a one trick.

Oh nono, I'm a D.va main, not a onetrick, if you see my stats they're mostly D.Va, but I play various different heroes.

In comp I only play a few of them, but because I usually play with my team, which means we all have our own role and everybody agrees on it.

For example for season 7 I only did the placements, nothing more, and in order from most played to least played (in 10 games) I have Mercy, D.Va, Lucio and Soldier

I could never be a onetrick, I've always been flex and usually take one for the team and take healer or tank if nobody else does it

So, I guess Defense is the least important role?

Ah, yes. The formidable sniper that deals damage every second rather than in large bursts over time.
