“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet”

-Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare

From the moment you are born you are given a name.  Some believe your birth name is not your true name but only a placeholder until you are ready to soul search and find your “true name”. In others, there is the belief that if you share your true name with the fae you can be ensorcelled or you give up your power completely.

People have saved “powerful” names for those that they would deem their heir and some names have belonged to people in history so terrible that the name itself has been wiped away, shamed if ever used to name a child that again.

To some, names are viewed as labels that only limit you. This could be something as simple as labeling yourself, your practice, or your relationships.

There are many stories both fiction and non-fiction that revolve around the idea that names hold power. In this week’s #NameGame OWC, We would like you to share what names mean to you and how you use them in your practice.

Not sure what to write? Here are some ideas!

-Do you have a Magical name? If so, share the story of how you got your name

-Did you struggle to find a name for your path? Did that hinder you?

-Do you use names or labels at all? If not, share why you wouldn’t.

-Do you feel naming something gives it power?

-Do you connect with your birth name?

-What is the history behind your namesake?

-Would you name a child or pet after a deity? Why or why not?

These are only just a few examples, and there are so many more creative ways to participate. Just be yourself and show us your creativity!

I’m a new witch and I am still learning. I feel like I need a magical name because I don’t really feel my actual name suits me and I feel very disconnected to it. I don’t have a name yet but I’m hoping to find one that I feel connected to soon:)

#NameGame I became bibi glimmersylph when I ed up with the #spoutwoodFairies. I dropped the glimmersylph part more or less b/c so many people can’t say the sylph part right and who wants to hear their name pronounced incorrectly all the time lol. I was born “brenda” but only my immediate family and really old friends know me that way. Bibi suits me just fine.

#NameGameOWC so I see lots of lovely witchy magical names. And often wonder why I haven’t felt one come my way. But my Birth/earth name, Pollyanna was given to me

By my dad. Himself very much a nature and magick type. He wouldn’t say he was a witch as such...... but he wa Avery gifted and taugh my the foundations to my own craft and Path..... I absolutesonate with Pollyanna. The vibration suits and so does the sound. I guess I’m blessed to have been given a name that encomes my human-ness and witchyness all in one, with a hint of Fae, so yeah Pollyanna is my every name :crystal_ball: :two_hearts: 🧚🏻‍♂🧙🏻‍♀🦂
