Choosing a good location for pet photography

In this months claws on photography blog I’m going to be going over how to find a good outdoor location to take photos in. These tips can apply to any animal you can easily take out to a location away from home.

★ A variety of backgrounds ★

A wide open field might not always be the best option as you basically just have a sky and grass which isn’t always the most interesting thing. A location with some trees, water, different plants, and bushes might be more suitable as there’s so many more options for different backgrounds.

★ Consider other people ★

If your animal is going to be highly distracted by other dog walkers, livestock, or just people in general then it’s probably best to pick somewhere quiet. Near a dog park or built up area might not be the best option for a lot of pets.

★ Timing ★

Make sure to get the time of day right. If you do choose an open field as your location for example the middle of the day probably isn’t best with harsh sunlight, so waiting for golden hour would be better. Also don’t leave it too late so it’s too dark, especially in winter.
