As a result, Karina had to grow up fast, learning to protect her younger brother, Jesse, who struggled in school and faced his own demons with depression. The idea of becoming a police officer was less about power and authority and more about wanting to be a protector in a world that didn’t offer her that protection as a child. • After earning her Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Portland State University, Karina applied to the LAPD.
