✧.            to my heart.

disclaimer

this is based on my opinions and how i view

this stereotype. you may agree or disagree,

but please be respectful. if anything is seen

as offensive, i'm really sorry i wrote this with

honest intent. in no way am i saying this is

how everyone feels. again this is just how i

feel. thank you and enjoy!

i'm an asian american high school

student. unfortunately i have to deal

with a very common stereotype that

         not everyone sees. unfortunately it's

such a common stereotype that people

confuse it to be a compliment. if you

get where i'm coming from, you

probably had to deal with this too.

i'm talking about the "all asians are

          smart" stereotype.

if you're not familiar with the stereotype

it's basically the belief that all asians,

especially east and south asian counties,

are smart. you may think "oh that's not a

bad thing", but you don't really know what

this saying can do to a person mentally.

(i go into this further later on) anyways

it basically states that no matter how

you are doing in class, if you are asian you

        are smart.

yes it hurts a lot of people mentally. many

asians that i have met believe that they

have to fit this standard of "smart".

they push themselves in order to do the

absolute best. while it may not seem bad

it truly takes a toll on a person. for instance,

if someone pressured under this stereotype

gets a "B" they mentally punish themself

for not doing better. it's more of a

mental challenge, but the public should

stop advertising that asians are "smart".

while it is known that asian countries

are at the fore front of education it is

ignorant to say ALL asians are smart.

this saying is hurting so many people

in ways that one can't even describe.

i'm not eastern or souther asian i'm southeast

asian, but i have dealt with this stereotype

for such a long time. i actually used to act

like i was dumb in elementary school

because i didn't want to been seen as

"another smart asian". honestly i didn't

even understand how harmful the saying

could be until i was in freshman year.

my freshman year i pushed myself so much

it honestly was kinda bad. i would

study and study until i basically was

burnt out. not only that year, but first

semester of sophomore year i took AP

World just because i wanted to be like

"the smart asian i am". looking back at it, i

was super idiotic. although i learned to

not fall under the pressure of the

"all asians are smart" stereotype. definitely

i still struggle with this, but it's a lot better

        than before

i hope i shed some light to a really

        common stereotype. i've become very

aware of asian discrimination the past

few years. due to many beautiful amazing

asian influencers i believe that people

are starting to become more aware of

the asian culture and how amazing it can be.

anyways i hope you enjoyed :) if you

would like to add something, definitively

comment. i would like to hear others

         people's perspective, but please be

respectful! :) (ps extra love to those who

know who the person is in the photos)

        side note!

i've just finish answering comments and i

realized i've never got to speak about

         another aspect of this topic!

asians aren't the only ones struggling with

this stereotype! no matter what ethnicity

you are, if you're in school you've most

likely had to deal with expectations of

people around you! i've just only talked

about asian americans because i myself

         dealt with this specific stereotype.

not only that but "being smart" is not a

compliment (i might make a blog about

this too). the effort that people put into their

studies is what gets them good grades.

yes some people may have to put more

effort, but we should be complimenting

their work and effort not their "smartness".

even i still struggle with complimenting people

based on their effort. it takes time, but

hopefully we understand and make an effort

not to compliment based on smartness!

not only that, but you have a voice! speak

up about your troubles and educate

people around you. anyways thank you

again for reading my blog! i wish you the

        best!

<3 much love

this is very true, this is why students in asian countries push themselves so hard. i barely see any that don't, i can feel stress from each student whenever i walk past each class, it's rather overwhelming :pensive:

it's just something that needs to be spread around. hopefully people can educate others about this stereotype so students can stop pushing themselves

Although I’m not Asian myself, I can relate with the stereotype of ‘being smart.’ Ever since people found out about my heritage, (My ethnicity is Norwegian but I have 10% Taiwanese blood in me) people always snicker things like, “Oh of course you know, you’re smart.”

“She doesn’t work hard because she’s smart” gets my blood boiling a lot. I’m sorry this happens to you and everyone else

We can only hope for the best :eyes: :revolving_hearts:

Finally someone said it. Once my friend asked me what I got on the test and I told them I got an 89 and they looked at me like I had just murdered someone. It gets on my nerves.
