History

This is Dorothy Vaughn. An African American women who worked for NASA and the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) as a mathematician, and human computer. In 1949, she had became the acting supervisor of the West Area Computers. Which was a group of all African American women who were mathematicians and human computers for NASA. Vaughn was later officially promoted to that position. Later in her career, she had prepared for the introduction of machine computers by teaching herself and her staff the programming language FORTRAN required to work for those computers.

Why I ire her

As an African American women myself. Who wants to be a programmer. I ire because she was one of the first African American programmers for NASA. She had taught herself and her team about a language for machines that even the white professionals who were assigned to work it might not have fully understood. Knowing that she was able to become a programmer in an industry dominated by mostly white males. Is really empowering for me. I think about what she and other African-Americans accomplished in the early part of programming. It helps me get through my doubts about the tech industry.
