How To Analyse Poems?

Hai Everyone!

Overmorrow I have an exam literature for English. It is the only subject that requires me to analyze poems, and I’m not to great at it.

I couldn’t get my hands on any proper practice exams or something I could use to guess what kind of grade I could get, so I have no clue how I’m going to do.

I do know that I’m not amazing at questions like ‘What did the author mean with this?’, ‘in what (2) ways can this be interpreted?’, ‘What is the bible reference in line X?’, etc. (For the record, I also can’t spot irony or sarcasm in written text if my life depended on it, so I suppose I’m not great at any of this to begin with). Does somebody have any tips on what to look for when analyzing poems?

When it comes to finding sarcasm and irony in a text, it's really all about gut feeling!

: the poet was also a human being!

i recommend using the “SPECSLIMS” framework! it covers everything you need to include in a literary analysis and it has a clear set of guidelines for you to follow. here’s a link [ https://prod-media.coolaustralia.org/wp-content/s/2016/09/06191706/SPECSSLIMS-Framework.pdf ] that explains it in more detail :heartpulse:

I took a quick look, it looks really handy! I’ll practice with it and hopefully be able to use it on the exam. Thanks a lot!

Irony are noun for the meaning of the opposite of what a person or thing means.

Sarcasm’s a noun and means to mock or use irony to think they actually mean something, when they don’t actually mean to tell it.

If you find anything that has to do with irony, and sarcasm it’s the opposite of what they mean.

This is probably horrible advice but u can genuinely bullshit ur way through it :joy: if u pick a “hidden message” that the author is trying to convey, it doesn’t matter if you’re right tbh. As long as u can back up what ur saying with some sort of coherent reason the examiner is likely to give u marks for it. There’s no right answers in poetry and it’s all up for interpretation so whatever u come up with is usually good if u have a good writing style and reason. Sorry if that doesn’t make sense lmao
