The Stars Are Beautiful

┗━━━━━━━━━━━━━┛

The raggedy skeleton shot upright from what had felt like a horrible nightmare. A pain in his center mass area, it shot throughout his whole body. Though, looking around he noticed something strange. The world around him, while still looking a little bit like the Snowdin he had grown to love, seems to be surrounded by stars. In fact the land around him seemed to be floating in space. The ground beneath him still felt cold and ridged, quickly he stood, to at least help ease himself of the horrible temperature of the ground.

"Where am I?" He spoke aloud, he wasn't too sure where he had ended up. All he had ed was a fight with a human, and then darkness. Did he fail the mission he had set out to do? That mental question alone sent everything he had done back to him. He had killed everyone he had known and loved, all to try and stop a human that he knew was way more powerful than he would ever be. He sighed, he had failed, and that had grown apparent very quickly. But, he wasn't dead, which shocked him the most. Hell, he wasn't even home now. He began his walk through the floating rock that seemed to mimic the home he knew.

The walk he had was long, though not very harsh. Tiring would be the only way to describe it, though he was doing pretty well actively for a dead man. He had finally reached the place he had been looking for, at least this worlds version of it. He saw a lively bustling town of civilians. It made the deranged skeleton smile slightly, positive thoughts of home had already started to come back. A more simple time, before the human had fallen. Though, he was tempted to leave, he felt as if he didn't deserve to come back to a town he had ravaged once before. He took a step back, and turned to leave. Though he had heard footsteps from behind himself, and then a hand touched his shoulder.

"Hey buddy, there isn't no need to be in such a rush... After all, ya just got here didn't you?" That voice, it was familiar, it was... his own voice. "You seem lost pal, I haven't seen you around here before. The name's Sans." The other skeleton had spoke, who was this star covered freak using his voice and his name? Still, he couldn't help but feel welcomed, and he didn't want to freak out the man in front of him. Clearly, if he was having his suspicions, this other skeleton was too. He looked down at his own jacket, thinking to call himself the only thing latched on himself. "My name is Dust, a pleasure to meet you."

The two now turned completely to face the town, the two skeletons walking side by side. Dust having to walk alongside this doppelgänger of his, smiling. Though, it was clear that this person was just the same as him. How did this even happen. The other skeleton finally spoke up. "So, as I was saying, I haven't seen you in town before. You knew here, or from some other place here?" It was a genuine question, that Dust didn't know how to answer. A wild look was stuck in his eyes from the the EXP he had gotten from his friends. He was sure, this version of himself, at least knew that much already. If the Dust hadn't made it more obvious. "That's the thing, I'm not too sure where I came from. Though, nothing good comes from where I came from."

The star covered skeleton laughed a little, putting his hand back on Dust's shoulder. "Well, that's just nonsense. Anyone can be good, ya know? They just gotta try." A sigh then left the same skeleton, looking at Dust, it was clear there was something he wanted to say. That's when the two approached this Sans' version of his home. More warm memories returned, though he quickly shook them off as the two entered the house. "Please, take a seat on the couch bud." The home owner had said to the raggedy skeleton, closing the door behind the duo.

"Now that it's just you and I, I feel like I can be honest. You're a Sans too huh? To be honest, this isn't my first time being in their situation." Dust was about to say something, but was quickly interrupted by the star skeletons words once more. "Please, call me Outer... ya know, like outer space? Quite fitting really." Dust didn't particularly know how to feel about all of this, he didn't know what to say really. All he could do was ask the important question. "What do you mean that you have done this before?"

Outer had crossed his arms, and leaned up against the wall closest to the door. He had to think about how he wanted to say this. "Well, it's hard to explain really. A skeleton that looked like you and me just showed up out of nowhere really. He was threatening to erase everyone and everything here from existence. Of course, I did my best to calm him down, because I..." Outer stopped, and then his smile seemed to grow a little wider. "Tell me, you've seen the stars right? Well, there's this really nice place here in Snowdin with a better view. I could take you if you'd like."

Dust had a feeling he knew what was cut off from his rant about this destructive skeleton. He was shown the stars, maybe that would make himself feel at peace too. He'd never be able to forgive himself for what he did, but maybe this could help him move on from the dark path he had forged for himself. "Sure, I'd... really appreciate that." Outer kept his smile at the response. Yet, the conversation wasn't about to end there, the star covered skeleton had one condition. "Now, of course, if you're gonna go with me. I'm gonna need to get you some new clothes. We might be in Snowdin, but dust is still easier to distinguish from snow than you might think. Besides, you've got a huge hole right there in the middle. Well, more like a cut, I wonder how that happened?"

Dust hadn't been paying too much attention to his own clothing, looking down at his shirt he finally saw it. A long cut going from his hip, all the way to his shoulder. That would have explained the cold he had felt earlier. Though it just reassured the loss he had just gone through. So, if he was here, his world was gone. He will probably never know how he ended up here, but that didn't bother him now. "Sure, what did you have in mind?" He spoke, wondering what his counterpart had in mind for him. "Well, I've got this old sweater I never really used. I'm sure it'll fit you, after all. Same size fits almost all of us right?" It wasn't a pun, but it did make the raggedy skeleton chuckle a little bit. It was a good joke after all. "Sure, I'd love that."

Outer had nodded at response, walking past Dust to go fetch said sweater. It didn't take too long, until he came back with a turtleneck sweater with a star pattern on it. It was definitely not his fashion type, but he took it. He didn't have the manners, nor the care to do it in private. He was just as much of a skeleton as the other person in the room. So he quickly changed out of the raggedy jacket and shirt, putting on his new found gift. "It ain't much, but it'll do until you can get your own clothing." Outer said, it was nice to see them in some clothing that wasn't battle torn. He never wished something like that upon someone.

"Now, about those stars. Just take my hand, and I'll teleport you there. Or, take a short cut rather, ya know?" Dust was really enjoying the time with his counterpart. So he didn't think for a single second before taking the star covered skeletons hand. Then, they showed up atop a mountain. That's what it looked like to Dust at least. There was a great view of all the stars here, it was beautiful. He had always wanted to see the stars while living in the underground, and the people of this world got to see them every day! He was almost jealous, but that wasn't important really now. He was here, alive, and for the most part... happy.

Outer had walked up to the now happy Dust, standing right beside him as the two looked up at the stars. He did have to ask some questions, he had hoped to not ruin the mood with them. "So, buddy, what happened in your world... if you don't mind me asking." Dust was really focused on the stars, he was almost surprised that the star skeleton had asked, but he would be more than happy to answer. As to leave no concerns about himself for this Sans. "Well... there was this human, they came and they kept killing us. I'm sure you know faintly about resets, right? Well, they'd just keep doing it, over and over again. I got fed up, I wanted it to stop, so I stole the one thing they needed. Their EXP, I destroyed those closest to me, and for what? To get a shot at taking them out?"

Outer nodded, he didn't know how to comfort someone who had been through so much. "You know, your pain and hate is just... The other person, his name was Error, the pain he had gone through was similar, but it physically broke him. I couldn't even say he is a Sans like you and me anymore. He'd otherworldly now... but he knows what we have been through. Just like I kind of know what you've been through. Sure, I've never gone as far to do something like you, I'm probably the laziest guy in town. But, do not hold it against yourself, you tried your best friend." Friend, that was a word Dust hadn't been expecting. He turned to look away from the stars, just to stare at Outer for a moment.

"You're not a bad guy Dust, you just did what you thought was right. Was it really right? Probably not, but you saw an ultimatum to your problem, and you shot your shot. You might not have succeeded, I don't even know if you've got a home to go back to now. But, you can rest here, I'll reassure you on that one." If Dust could cry, he would, his strangely colored eyes left Outers gaze, before looking down at the ground. He did feel guilty about what he had done, but Outer was right, from the way he had been speaking. He knew nothing would change the past.

He decided to sit, and look back up at the stars, he didn't want to say anything else to the star covered skeleton. Though, he had a feeling Outer didn't need him to. Dust would never be able to repay the kindness he had been given here today. Outer had followed suit, and sat down right beside the skeleton. He too looked up at the stars, a glimmer of hope in his eyes, ready to help this skeleton get back up on his feet and start a new. Before saying one last thing.

"The stars are beautiful, ya know?"

Another story, and this time it was thanks to the help of the community! I had held polls to determine on what I should write about, and surprisingly Outertale and Dusttale had tied. So, instead of hosting a third poll to determine who the victor should be, I decided to just to both. With all that being done, I was able to create a wholesome little soul searching story. Key note, no, this isn't a ship. I mean, if there is someone out there who ships this, then you do you. Maybe this story even gave you a little content of mine to enjoy? But it was not my intention.

With that being said, the piece was simply made to bring wholesome content to this Amino. I've noticed a good amount of my posts haven't really done much of that in the past, and I wanted to change that with this story. Besides, I find the poll portion of this a lot more enjoyable. It gives me a slight idea of what people want at the time. So I'd love to do more polls in the future. Even if my stories will pop up once in a blue moon.

Now onto the proof and inner details.

Now, I did some digging, and I'm not too sure if I got the correct answer or not. As I'm not too sure if there is a difference between the AU and the Fangame, however. I will go ahead and run with it. The AU Dusttale is a project ran by Evan Streblow who I could only find on Gamejolt.

Along with this, it seems to be that Outertale was originally created by someone by the name of 2mi127 on Tumblr. However clicking this link leads to a page that does not exist. So, the authentic nature of it is unknown.

The picture of Dust Sans was made by Kychuk on Tumblr, go check their work out!

The art of Outer Sans was made by RandomColorNice on DeviantArt, go check out there art!
