Seeing as how it is January, the beginning of the year, it only makes sense to talk about the beginnings of writing.

Inspiration: The process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative.

I find that sometimes, one of the hardest parts of writing can be simply finding ideas, or... Inspiration! So, here are some tips and tricks to help get those creative juices flowing.

A brilliant way to not only invoke new ideas, but improve grammar and vocabulary, is to read books.

Take a look at the different characters, try to think of various "what if" situations, and place them in. Thinking, and even writing these often spawn new ideas that can be used in your own story. The same can easily be done with games, TV, and film.

Let's do an example, shall we? How about an Undertale one.

What if... Frisk never fought Asgore?

Now, the ending of Undertale is completely changed. Does Frisk live in harmony with the monsters? Or are they constantly on the run? These questions spark ideas and provide a basis for your story.

Better yet, you can take the idea of a person living in a community that doesn't fit in, and take it anywhere you want!

Why don't you give this "What if" a try.

Dream what? Dream diaries?

Yes, good reader, you have not misheard. Dream diaries are used to scribble down dreams before you forget them. It's incredibly useful for spawning new ideas that you would never think of whilst awake. By taking these, and using them to inspire your writing, you can create incredible, often wacky, stories. A bonus side effect is that you're less likely to forget dreams if you have one of these.

Fun fact: Robert Louis Stevenson's book 'The Strange Case Of Doctor Jekyll And Mr Hyde', has many chapters inspired by his dreams!

Seriously, even just sitting down and writing the first thought that comes into your head. Keep on writing down your thoughts until something inspiring comes up. This quite often does not work, and for some, never does. However, it is always worth a shot.
