as someone who has watched some of the tv series i had a good feeling i would enjoy the books so i decided to finally pick up darkly dreaming dexter by jeff lindsay. this book follows our main character dexter morgan, a blood splatter analyst as he helps unravel crimes. but there’s another side to him, a darker side. he too commits heinous crimes, his victims? criminals.

whilst reading about his crimes you also follow along a current case the miami police department are tackling, a serial killer within their midsts. dexter is a brilliant forensic analyst who has an usual ion about blood. he always seems to understand and get into the mind of the killer(s) they are trying to track down; these ‘gut feelings’ that dexter has are utilised by his adoptive sister, debra who gets him to help solve a murder she’s been desperately trying to solve. thus trying to help propel her police career force and onto the homicide department.

there was also a shocking reveal at the end. as a result of that you also learn more about dexter’s backstory—something which i had been wanting to understand more throughout the entirety of the book: why dexter is the way he is...

i throughly enjoyed this book. reading the book whilst your point of view is that of a killer is so interesting and gripping. you see things from such a perspective unlike one you would typically read. his inability to understand other individuals is another factor of the book i enjoyed reading as dexter tries hard to blend into a unusual world, feeling so inhuman. the dynamics between dexter and other characters in the book are also so fascinating to me. like i adore the interactions between deb, his sister and that of his father (who knows who he truly is and actually somewhat helps and encourages it).

overall i would definitely recommend this book series to anyone who likes a good crime novel, especially one with such an interesting perspective. i can’t wait too pick up the next book in the series!
