”Oh my dear little brother. Did you really think that I actually cared about our bond? You should’ve known it would only be a matter of time before I had to dispose of you. You’re just a little puny pawn on my chessboard. Your time has run out. It’s time to say goodbye.”

Lesev said nothing but stared at his sister in shock. He truly had nothing more to say to her yet he couldn’t understand why she would be willing to do this to him. His mind raced over the possibilities of what would happen next and what he could possibly say to her.

Lesev’s eyes momentarily held Eldan’s fixed and stern glare, only now could he sense the broken bond and the betrayal that clung to the air filling his lungs. It was as if now he realised after all this time, that she was the one that was suffocating him; only now did he notice that her presence poisons him. She was dripfeeding him a lifetime of torture.

Lesev regained his composure for a moment and locked eyes with her, but he didn’t see his sister staring back at him. It was a stranger, it has been a stranger all along. He’d lost her… for good. She was no longer a familiar, a twin whom shared a bond with for a lifetime. She was the face of betrayal and evil that seeped through her veins and allowed her to manipulate and wreak havoc on whatever laid in her path. This was who his sister was all along. How could he of all people not know what she was truly like? Lesev furrowed his brow and thought to himself.

It was as if a lifetime of pain and exhaustion had caught up with the man as suddenly he sank to his knees. All this fighting, suffering, for what? He had lost so much; his heart ached, yet a broken desperate rhythm was beating hard against his chest, like it was taking its last breaths. Yet despite this it was fighting with the last bits of adrenaline to escape its prison that it had been held in for so long.

“How could you do this?” Lesev spoke softly, the words barely escaped him and seemed so timid and feeble.

“Because I can.” She snarled back, the force and bluntness of her words felt like another twisting dagger into his heart. Out of all the people that could do this to him, he never doubted her.

“Why, Eldan, just-just- why?” He stammered and spluttered the words to the ground that he wished would consume him in an instant.

Eldan crouched down in front of him and lifted his chin up with her hand. Immediately she looked him dead in the eyes and spoke brutally and without a hint of remorse to the one she’d once swore to protect. “I told you why already, you are nothing to me.”

The man felt vulnerable and a new forming disdain boiled inside of him directed to the person who stole his sister, or rather this rose-tinted haze of a sister, from him. He felt small and insignificant in the moment and responded with her snarky retorts in the only way he knew, by shifting his face to look away from her, he had to break her deathly gaze.

Tentatively he began to stir silently on the ground and as he did so a single tear rolled down his cheek.
