stargazing

i used to look up at the night sky and wonder if the cool breeze or twinkling star was a sign — from god, from karma, from fate

and when my mother died i clung the idea that they were signs from her— that she was still with me

the night sky has been devoid of stars for years now— perhaps only when i am searching. it could be city smog or coincidence but

there is one small part of me that feels this may be the biggest sign of all— there were never any signs, she was never with me, i have always been alone

the night sky is dark tonight— is it fate or simply coincidence? does it matter either way?
