The first thing we do when we are born is to breathe. Some call our first breath the breath of life and after that first breath we spend our entire lives breathing most of the time without realizing it. There are many cultures that believe that there is power in the breath. The Hindu call it Prana and pranayama is simply power breathing. These techniques are used for many different effects. Ever wander why you yawn? Ever realize that taking a deep breath of fresh air can not only invigorate you spiritually but energetically? Have you noticed that different smells can produce different thoughts and emotions? All these represent the power of breath.

To demonstrate the power of breath let’s try something simple.

Breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth. As you breathe begin to count. So as your breathing in count to 3 and then as your breathing out count to 3. Then when ready increase the count. 5 in 5 out then 7 in and 7 out. You’ll notice that as you do this your breathing will be deeper and will also slow down.

Then add in some breath holding. Breathe in 3 hold 3 and then exhale 3. And then try to work your way up. Notice how it begins to take concentration to continue the pattern. You may even forget which number your on or you might fall asleep. All of these things are ok. If you forget your number start over again at 3. If you fall asleep enjoy your rest.

To really challenge yourself add breath holding at the end. So 3 in 3 hold 3 out and 3 hold. Notice as you hold your breath and hold your lungs empty your in control.

Record your progress and effects in a journal. Does it make you feel sleepy? Does it wake you up? Notice how often your mind wants to intrude on your counting. Notice your body reaction. Do you clench your muscles while holding your breath? Record your reactions and even thoughts and feelings.

If at any point you have trouble breathing, you feel your heart racing, or you feel dizzy or lightheaded stop immediately. Work at your own pace. Eventually you can research and try other pranayama techniques and discover their effects as well. Be safe, be smart, and to breathe.

It is a great exercise...when I was learning about my psychic abilities our teacher would have us do it to a 10 count 5x.
