There are many reasons we want to call upon and work with our ancestors. Whatever the reason most of the time we call upon them for their guidance. Whether it be guidance during a spell or divination guidance conversation. For alot of witches ancestral workings is a huge part of their practice. Now how and what we use for this is a different story for all of us.
For myself when working or calling upon my ancestorsI like to use different herbs. I know alot of you are of course you use herbs Gypsy. Yea I know but I love my plants. But here is what makes my herbal working a little different. I have a groups of herbs for different purposes and ancestors. Yes I categorize these things because certain ancestors are better for certain workings.
Now let's discuss the herbs I like to use. what I use may not be what you would. I use things that I personally associate and connect to my ancestors. The one main base herb I do you use across all categories is Blood Root. Blood Root is my symbol connect of my blood connection to my family. This is what I use for them to recognize that I am their kin. Now that's the on thing that's the same. Now what it come to needing them for prosperity, protection and things of this nature I like to use a couple herbs. I will use cedar, shamrock clovers, and flower or plant I personally associate with the ancestors I am calling upon. So for instance. If I am calling in my grandmother I use violets. Or if I want to work with my grandfather I use marigolds or cigar tobacco. These would be examples of ancestors who where there to protect and keep me safe and on the right track.
When I comes to baneful workings and ancestors I will call upon those that in know their past issues and what they did. So as bat shit crazy as this sounds I will go as far back as possible in my bloodline for this. I will go back to my viking warriors. For this the herbs I will bring out the horehound, hawthorn and primrose. These are each herbs of the gods and goddess my norse ancestors asked for guidance from.
So the way I call my ancestors with the law herbs is to burn them as incense. I take these herbs and make a loose incense. Charcoal disc are my bff in this. Before I ever start my work I call my ancestors in. So the herb burning gets done before anything else.
In the end of all this I want to say make these kind of workings VERY personal to your bloodline. Associate things with each person you are calling upon. Tailor it to your needs. Ancestral work is extremely personal. These are workings aren't Betty Crocker recipes.
