Dmitri Schostakowitsch - Waltz N.2

no trigger warnings apply.

“I don’t think this is a good idea,” She whispered in a soft, low voice.

Kiara’s hands were wringing the edge of her dress and her legs shook with the effort of standing in the borrowed heels.

She didn’t want to be here, or anywhere other than the little opening in the forest where she and her girlfriend would met. No judgmental eyes or scoffing aristocracy were ever there, just them and the song birds.

It was peaceful.

This- this dance, this dress, these heels, and this stupid necklace- they were all too much.

It didn’t suit her.

She felt dirty in it.

“You look stunning though,” Her girlfriend- Thea- had told her, but she didn’t believe it.

Maybe the dress looked gorgeous, but not on her.

She wasn’t meant to wear clothes fit for royalty.

“Please, just one dance.” Her girlfriend begged, “then we’ll go. We can grab a bottle of wine and a blanket, and we’ll spend the night in the meadow. How does that sound?”

Wonderful, actually, but everyone would still see them.

See the beautiful princess dancing with some

lower-class baker.

It sounded like on of those books Thea would read to her late at night.

Kiara couldn’t read. Had never learned how- had never needed it. Numbers were all she needed to run her business.

But the music- she could hear it through the castle walls. She didn’t know how to describe the emotions it held in every tone. It made her want to throw her fears away, to take Thea in her arms and whisk her onto the balls floor as if she were some prince, fit to date the kings daughter, able to fight by and for her.

But, all she could do was fed her half-decent bread and kiss her under the moonlight.

“One dance,” She reassured herself, taking the princesses hand and pushing one of the side halls doors open.

People- royalty, nobles, knights- they were all chatting and eating and dancing.

Oh what the people in her town would give to experience this.

And the music was louder without the barrier, long cords pulling her in. She was mesmerized, and out of the corner of her eye, Thea was too- but not by the music.

Her cheeks flushed bright red and she tried to hide in the arm not clutching at Thea’s hand. “I’ve just nev’r-“

“It’s okay.” She said in the airy, perfect accent that spoke of her status.

Thea placed one hand on Kiara’s left shoulder blade, the other taking her right hand, before she leaned in and whispered again her ear, “just follow my lead.”

There was no way it was that easy, but she did her best to dance with Thea, even if her movements were a little jerky and uncertain.

Eventually, she allowed herself to relax, letting the flow of the music and the dance take her and Thea away from the glaring eyes, or the hands that try to burst their bubble.

She realizes, as Thea tugs her closer and smiles warmer than a winters hearth, that she’s in love.

Utterly, wholly in love.

With a princess.

Princess Thea.

The very same Princess Thea that was leaning in very closely, almost as if...

They kissed.

A harsh whisper broke out around them, but Thea kept her close until the song ended before taking her off the dance floor and gesturing for a servant.

“A bottle of wine, please,”

The servant nodded and quickly went to the kitchen to fetch a bottle for her.

The King used that as an opportunity to approach, he was a large, intimidating man, with a kind smile and a battle scar across his left eye.

“Thea,” He spoke in a deep, self-assured voice.

“Father,” She responded in kind.

“Who is this?” He nodded towards Kiara.

“My girlfriend.”

“I see.”

The silence made the servant hover with the wine, but Thea gestured for him to bring it to her.

“We’re going to sleep in the meadow tonight.” Thea stated, no room for argument.

He smiled sweetly at her, “If you want, but have her for breakfast, I would never-“

He stopped, brows bunching together as he thought of the words to say.

“Your mother-“

“Father-“

“If this is who you want to marry-“

“DAD!”

He ducked his head and rubbed his neck.

She softened, hugging him before adding, “We’d be happy to come over for breakfast.”

“Good.”

Kiara bowed low to the king as Thea dragged her off, bottle clutched tightly in her hand.

The Queen had ed not too long ago and it was still a sensitive topic for the royal family.

Breakfast would be... fun?

And scary.

But for now, they had a meadow to lay in.

It's not too late, and I really enjoyed it!

I like the characters, and the meadow, it's a really sweet thing. I like the dancing, though I wish there was more detail there. I can imagine what you describe, but more in depth descriptions would've really been great

The ending feels a little rushed, I did get all the information necessary, but I would've liked to know more. Did the queen know abt the gf? Was the queen strict, accepting? What is with the kindgdom, are the people understanding?

I like the ending, when the princess says dad when getting emotional. A really sweet touch, to break the fassade of decency and royalty.

Very sweet piece!
