Hey fellow writers,

So I got bored and decided to look at the challenges and discovered the #BackToSchool competition. Though school for me doesn't start up again till September, I decided that this would be a great challenge. I hope you enjoy it! I give you... Murder on the First Day of School: Chapter 1.

Nichelle walked into the school. Her final year as a high school student! Oh boy she was excited. She had gotten all of her supplies, plus some extra art supplies, the week before and had been super excited to start all week. She placed all of her stuff on the table she knew her best friend, Brianna would be sitting at and sat down. Her knee bobbing up and down as she watched the new freshman walk through the door. Suddenly, she couldn't see as hands wrapped around her eyes. She smiled as she recognized the normal greeting of her best friend.

"Hey, Brianna," she stated as she turned to hug her friend.

"Hey, Nichelle. Are you ready for our final year?!"

"Yeah!"

Nichelle looked around as her friend beamed down at her.

"Where's your stuff?" she asked.

"In my locker," she replied.

"Really? Already?" Nichelle complained.

Brianna rolled her eyes and gathered some of Nichelle's stuff and gestured with her head to follow her.

"Don't worry, I got you one too."

Nichelle laughed as she followed her best friend up the stairs.

"Typical Brianna" she thought. "Always thinking,"

Her smile faded away into a gasp as they came upon their lockers. They were the ones on the Senior Perch where previous Seniors that were the best seniors had their lockers. Nichelle smiled and let out a squeal.

"Brianna!" she screamed as she squeezed her in a bear hug. "You didn't!"

Brianna smiled knowingly at her. "I did."

Nichelle laughed then put her supplies in order in her new locker.

"Are you ready to take on the day?" Brianna asked as they headed back down the stairs.

"You better believe..." Nichelle didn't get to finish. A scream sounded from outside and a freshman came running into the school.

"Someone come quick!" she cried. "A teacher has been murdered!"

Nichelle glanced fearfully at her friend, for Brianna's dad was a teacher and they both ran outside to see. Thankfully it wasn't her dad, but their math teacher Mrs. Tanja.

Nichelle glanced at her friend, knowing this was right up her ally and could tell immediately that her mind was taking it all in. Nichelle was surprised by the absence of her, always present, camera.

"Brianna," Nichelle nudged her. "Where's your camera?"

"In my pocket,"

"Well, what are you waiting for Sherlock?" Nichelle responded with the nickname from Brianna's first lead role. "Take some pictures and start sleuthing,"

Brianna smiled at her, then did as she was told.

"That's my girl," she heard someone say. Turning, she recognized the girl who played Watson in the show, Kaya.

"Hey, get up there Watson. Sherlock needs you,"

Kaya looked at her like she was nuts, but did as she was told. Then gestured for Nichelle to follow.

"I'm not her best friend anymore, Nichelle. You are. She'll need both of us if she wants to figure this out,"

"But I'm not..."

"You're an artist aren't yah?" Kaya interrupted. "Then you have an eye for detail. Now come on or she might get discouraged,"

Nichelle knew Kaya was right so she followed, but stayed far back. Then her eyes began to take notice of little things. She didn't notice Brianna talking to her, until she yelled "Nichelle, are you listening?"

"What?"

Brianna smiled at her, then repeated her question. "What are you seeing. No one has eyes like you. What are you seeing?"

Nichelle took a look around. Her eyes hitting every detail and swallowing them up as they ed by.

"Watson," Nichelle heard Brianna say. "Get ready to take some notes,"

The students and teachers that had begun to surround the area drew closer together as Nichelle took a deep breathe and began.

"The dirt around the body is scattered, meaning there was a struggle. The blood oozing from her head indicates a head wound which would mean brutal force was used. There is a footprint next to the bench pointing away from the body, meaning the killer was on the move away from the scene after the murder was committed,"

"Okay, but how do you know that is the footprint of the murderer?" Brianna asked. "It could be one of the students' here,"

"Its not. See around the print there is a remnant of dust meaning that it was made at a run. Also, the footprint is to big to be anyone from this school, meaning it came from an unknown being,"

"Well," Brianna stated as she walked to Kaya. "That settles it, Kaya you're fired,"

Laughter broke out among the shocked students, then Brianna began again.

"Naw, just kidding." She laughed. "Seriously though, Nichelle I'm impressed. That was amazing. I'm impressed."

Nichelle blushed. "Thanks, now it's to you Brianna, Kaya, where do you guys think the murderer went, who was it, and what was used?"

Kaya stroked her chin. "Good questions. We could ask the principal to see the tapes," Suddenly cop cars surrounded the area and everyone was moved out of the way, including the crime fighting trio.

"Out of the way," barked one cop.

"This is a crime scene," cried another.

Brianna looked around. "Wait!" she cried.

"Sir," she said to the Chief. " I'm Detective Brianna and this is my crew. We found some major clues that we would like..."

"I don't have time for this," The chief interrupted. "Sargent! Take these three 'detectives' back to class please."

"Wait!" Brianna cried again. Nichelle looked at her in shock, but sadly, Brianna didn't catch it. Brianna had pulled out a very realistic badge of a detective and held it up or the Chief and the Sargent to see.

"I'll say this again. My name is Detective Brianna and these two are my crew. We found some interesting pieces of e evidence and have a lead if you don't mind,"

Nichelle watched her, no longer timid friend as the Chief stared in surprise at the badge and called off the Sargent.

"My apolagise, Detective. Aren't you a little young to be a detective?"

"Yes, yes I am, but I had a great teacher. Now, come on you two. We have a crime to solve,"

Nichelle followed Brianna in amazment, then glanced at Kaya. She had a shocked fave, so Nichelle assumed she had the same expression.

"So, you have a lead," The Chief began. "What is it, might I asked."

Brianna whirled around, forcing Nichelle to recognize her detective face.

"Kaya, if you would,"

Kaya stepped forward and began reading the notes she took from earlier. Nichelle was taken aback, for Kaya read, word for word, exactly what Nichelle had said earlier. When Kaya finished, all eyes were on the Chief. He rubbed his chin, then sighed.

"Well, Detective," he addressed Brianna. "It appears that this is indeed your case. What do you suggest we do?"

Brianna stroked her chin, as was her standard procedure of thinking. After a few minutes, she snapped her fingers.

"Ah!" she said. "Let's continue on Kaya's lead. Kaya, Nichelle, let's go find our Principal,"
