Improving your dog photography with lenses

Claws on Photography - Written by myself

╚════════════╝

Hello! For this months claws on Photography blog I’ve chosen to write about some types of camera lenses you can use for dog photography. I’ll be going over a little bit about each one and showing an image taken using it underneath. This of course isn’t every lens and the information is aimed at dogs but can definitely be applied to other pets.

Sorry that this month just applies to cameras. Next months will include phones too!

50mm

The 50mm is great for capturing beautiful portraits of your dog. Depending on which one you own these lenses can go all the way down to an aperture of 1.2 but even the cheapest one goes down to 1.8. If you didn’t already know the lower these numbers the blurrier the background becomes which means you can create some nice bokeh. The 50mm is a prime lens which means you can’t zoom in and out as it’s at a fixed focal length (you have to move closer or further away from the subject yourself).

70-200mm

The 70-200 is quite a versatile lens. You can zoom in and out with it unlike the 50 and it’s a great one for dog photography as it takes amazing portraits but is also great for taking action shots.

16-35mm

This is a wide angle lens and will enable you to get some cool shots of your dog. One thing to keep in mind with this is that if you choose to shoot at 16mm you will need to be very close to the dogs face and not all dogs will feel comfortable with this.

24-70mm

This zoom lens is quite commonly used in dog photography. It’s supposed to be super sharp and overall just a nice lens as you don’t have to be super close to the dog if you don’t want to.
