There is no real definitive dictionary for the different types of roles for cats in the game so I decided to take a shot and clarify some roles myself.
Before I go on, let me tell you what a role is. A cats role is not the same as their in game abilities but rather what purpose they serve in battle. For example: even though seafarer has freeze against alien he is still an AOE attacker too along with being a debuffer due to how good seafarers stats are.
I divided roles into 4 Categories being Meatshields, Attacker, Defense and as well as a extra others section.
I also listed a couple examples of the role too with some cats and a definition.

Meatshields
Spammable Meatshield
-Anything that is around 75 cents and can be spawned in 2 secs. These cats are your basic meatshields. Examples of these are Cat and Wall Cat.
Long range meatshield
-These meatshields are generally more expensive, and they stand at a far distance. Used sparingly, but protect your stack against certain LD enemies. Examples of these are Sports Day Cat and Fungi Cat.
Spammable Tanker
-These meatshields are more bulkier and can take more than 1 or 2 hits from an enemy. They are generally less spammable and more like a fusion of tanks and meatshields. Examples of these are Ramen and Viking.
Attackers
True Sniper
-These cats stay at your backline and should not absorb any hits at any circumstances. They sit back and either send hard hits, debuff or chip away at enemies. Examples of these are Cyberpunk and Aphrodite.
Sniper
-Some s often like to put true sniper and sniper as the same role. But unlike true snipers, regular snipers are your normal general attackers except with lots of range that can hit most backline enemies. They generally have LD and can absorb more damage than true snipers. Examples of these are Miko Mitama and Kintaro.
Kamikaze
-Also referred to as Suicide Bombers, they deal insanely large amounts of damage in a couple seconds only to die almost instantly after being spawned. Examples of these are Maglev and Awakened Bahamut.
Rusher
-Often confused with Kamikaze, Rushers are fast and cheap but don’t necessarily have to deal insane amounts of damage in several seconds. They survive longer and their main goal is to put pressure on the enemies. Examples of these are D’arktanyan and Peach Devils.
Nuker
-Heavy duty offense units, they are slow, and expensive but have incredible offensive capabilities. Nukers deal a unholy amount of damage in a single attack. Examples of these are Lasvoss and Jizos Moving Castle.
Generalist Attacker
-General attackers are ordinary, mid ranged offense units. Good offense makes good defense. Not much to say here. Examples like these are Mighty Lord Gao and Catman.
Spammable AOE attacker
-One of the most valuable roles in the game, these cats can be stacked to deal insane amounts of DPS and have power in numbers. AOE stands for Area of effect. Examples of these are Kasa Jizo and Cyborg Cat.
Pusher
A relatively new role due to some new units, Pushers are cats that push large crowds of enemies back, including backliners. Pushers generally KB enemies multiple times in one attack. Examples of these are Kubiluga and Kasli the Scourge.
Critters
-Also known as Crit Units, these are units that preform critical hits against metal enemies. Most crit units are specialists, which means they’re super effective when damaging metals but do poorly everywhere else. Examples of these are Jurassic Cat and Paladin.
Defense
Tank
-Tanks are units that are fine with absorbing damage. They have somewhat decent offensive capabilities, but these units are bulkier and can withstand some attacks. Examples of these are Gamereon and Sodom.
Frontline Tank
-Frontline Tanks are meant to absorb damage. They have practically no range and are up in the enemies face. Most uber variants of frontline tanks have godlike damage similar to those such as a nuker. Examples of these are Shellboner and Divine Kai
Wave Blocker
Simply anything that blocks waves is a wave blocker. They protect your other more vulnerable cats that can die from wave enemies. Most wave blockers can also be considered frontline tanks outside wave usage. Examples of these are Octopus and Eva00
Knockbacker
I couldn’t find a better name for this so we’ll stick with Knockbacker. These units are basically every KB unit out there. They keep enemies away and far from your attackers. They are often confused with pushers. Unlike pushers, Knockbackers struggle to reach backline enemies thus they can only eliminate the current frontline threat. Examples of these are Mizli and Pirate Cat.
Debuffer
-Debuffers are units whose primary job is to damage the opponents ability to inflict certain effects to your cats. Anything whose job is to freeze, slow or weaken a certain type or a certain group of enemies are considered debuffers. KB is not in the category of a debuff. Examples of these are Shaman and Coppermine.
Suicide Debuffer
-A very very rare role to find, but it does exist. Suicide Debuffers are basically Kamikaze units except they inflict debuffs on the enemy instead of dealing quick burst damage. Examples of these are glass cat and Vendor cat.
Combo Slaves
-These units serve no purpose in actual battle but are very useful in participating in cat combos that can be crucial to have in battle. Using these cats to activate cat combos is technically ing the battlefield which is why Combo Slaves are in this category. Examples of these are Ninja Cat and Zombie Cat.
Other & Roles
UR dump
-Cats like these are useless, no value in battle and useless combos. They are very cheap to upgrade and their main purpose is to jack up your rank. Due to the fact that you can upgrade cats and get UR, there is no cat in the game that is completely useless with no use or benefit. Examples of these are Eggy Cat and Gold Cat.
Generalist
-A generalist is a unit that is considerably useful outside of their niche. Some units primarily specialize in being a generalist. Examples of these are Mighty Lord Gao and Miko Mitama.
Specialist
-Specialists are units that are strictly and primarily used only through their niche. They are very good at their specific target/ job but greatly struggle outside of their niche. Examples of these are Balrog and Gothicc Mitama
Proc Unit
-Proc stands for Programmed Random Occurrence
-Anything that has a chance to inflict a effect on a enemy. Being a proc unit does not mean you have debuffer role. Kasli for example is a proc unit with 50% chance to KB. This doesn’t mean she’s a debuffer, she just has the qualities of a proc unit and involves RNG. However a unit like Miko Mitama is not a proc unit as her slow effect is guaranteed and involves no RNG.
