Hi! I'm Jordan.

Brokentale is my Undertale AU. It started off with a drawing back in 2018. I am a really big fan of Undertale and seeing everyone design their own Sans and AU got me interested.

Brokentale is basically the underground flipped on it's head. Not literally, But it's just places and people might seem like the opposite of themselves compared to Undertale.

The cause was due to events that happened in Brokentale "Origins". In short, the game becomes corrupt and is forced to reset while the corruption is still having an effect.

Ruins are more or less the same.

In the end it creates an entirely new world, a new story and new problems. A few examples is that the Regions of Undertale are environmentally reversed.

Snowdin is like Summer, warm and full of grassy lands.(Haven't stuck to a name yet).

Waterfall is a Dessert, harsh weather conditions and sand everywhere.(Haven't stuck to a name yet)

Hotland is obviously much like Snowdin in the fact that it's very snowy.(Haven't stuck to a name yet)

The Core is not technological, it's a self sustaining natural power source surrounded by nature, but it's very creepy. Like a haunted jungle(Haven't stuck to a name yet)

Castle is more or less the same.

A lot of the characters personalities have changed too. Their history can be a lot darker. There are different factions within the underground which makes living conditions a struggle and there are constant wars.

The humans weren't killed in this world so everything has changed in small or drastic ways.

Before the "Broken" Event, the human had played through the game hundreds of times. It had gotten boring.

Frisk and Chara, together they began running genocide routes, feeding off each other's need for something new, testing the world over and over.

Eventually, the human sensed something strange... like instructions written into their soul—impossible to fully understand. But followed what they were told.

First: play through the game with no items.

Easy—they knew every pattern, every trick.

Second: do not die until the final battle.

Third: die exactly 283 times at Sans’ hands.

The conditions seemed meaningless, almost random, and yet after reaching Sans... after death #283, Sans said something new.

Another thing became apparent while the human was fighting... The human didn't take any damage from Sans' attacks, a byproduct of the dialogue error.

Now, all the human had to do was defeat Sans one final time to achieve true power. The human didn’t know why or how, but it this was working.

At the final battle, Sans fought hard, but to no avail, his efforts were for nothing. Sans knew this would be the end. As it does every time we reach this point of the battle, Sans is losing consciousness from pushing his limits, trying to keep the human in place.

As Sans' magic loses grip.

The human stepped forward.

Sans falls asleep.

The human is ready to strike.

Human:"Goodbye Fool"

They swing...

But.

Flowey s the fight and grabs the humans arm. The human is taken back by this betrayal. But this wasn't some plot against the human, Flowey acted out of fear. Fear that they'll be gone forever this time.

Flowey knew something wasn't right, like this could go beyond some new ending to sate the humans' thirst for something exciting. This event could end everything... and the human would be the only one standing.

Once again, Flowey faced death, but they were able to slow the human down enough to wake Sans up. Flowey told him to reach Asgore. There was a chance—if they could gather all the souls, they might still stop all this.

Sans was too exhausted to use magic.

All he could do was run.

From behind:

"TRAITOOooooooOR!!!"

A shriek echoed down the halls as the world began glitching, tearing open holes in reality. Sans calls out to Asgore.

Startled by Sans' shout, Asgore had tripped on his own cape as he was turning. Asgore was holding one of the human souls.

Asgore was already pondering the idea of whether he would use the souls because Flowey had told Asgore of the humans' weird behaviour. Alas, the soul fell from Asgores grasp as he tripped.

As if destiny controlled their fate, Sans fell—into the very fabric of the game, and the soul that asgore dropped followed. They ed through the game code, watching the world break.

As Sans fell, they unexpectedly crashed into a colour palette embedded deep in the data, Sans' skull cracked permanently. His body and clothes changed, glitching Madingley.

Sans' soul was so weak and falling apart, so the soul fused with his to save him. By pure coincidence, Sans' body kept cycling through different colours, and eventually, his body became purple. The colour of Sans' clothes had been inverted, and the soul that merged with his was also purple. The power to persevere.

As Sans drifted through the code... unconscious. a glitched name suddenly appeared—(faintly resembling “Gaster”). This fake accessed the corrupt system:

(Attempt force reset? Yes or No)

They typed...

Yes.

WARNING: Forcing a reset may corrupt your game. Continue?

Yes.

The game reset.

After that promt, Sans was then launched back into the world, but it was still glitched and full of errors, still broken...

The world was falling apart. The human

couldn’t reset anymore—Sans’ new found power outmatched the humans. Even if the human could reset, it wouldn't fix anything. It would've just torn the world further apart. So Sans had to remove the parasite that was holding onto this broken world and create a new world... A true "Final Reset"

That meant erasing "Frisk".

Overwhelmed with panic and guilt, the human was powerless against Sans. All the human could do was apologize—for everything...

Sans was able to "Conjure" a dimensional rift to the void and banished the human. This left Frisk in a corporeal state. Frisks tears endlessly fell, as if to say there aren't enough tears to make up for what they've done. But the true science is that the void makes corrupted objects sustainable by pausing their state of being. Basically put, Frisk entered "Sad" and "Crying" so they'll always be in a constant state of depression and tears will fall indefinitely.

As the broken world began to collapse, Sans looked deep into his soul and imagined a world like this one, but whole. And with all of his power... he created the "FINAL RESET".

The idea was simple: start everything from the beginning. No more resets. No memories of what came before, not even his own. A brand New World.

And It worked. All world data was transferred over. Monsters were saved. The broken pieces of the old world were left behind.

Though, Frisk wasn't the only thing that was erased. Flowey wasn't saved either. He was flagged as "corrupted data"—an anomaly—and left behind due to choices he’d made during the Broken Event (Saving Sans was the cause).

Flowey was no longer considered "important," and Asriel was separated as they were identified as two characters. Flowey was consumed into the void alongside Frisk and everything else that was deemed beyond repair. Sans is a special exception as he is the one in control of not only the new world but the old one as well. Meaning he can traverse between dimensions.

🤍 A New Beginning 🤍

After the FINAL RESET. We found the human, "Chara," the first human to fall into the Underground back at the yellow flower bed. But this isn't as simple as Chara arriving in "Frisks" place. Chara has actually returned to the time when they originally fell.

Chara was confused but enlightened by the fact that they actually everything. Sans' wish did not go all that he thought it would. There were flaws in the process, and eventually, those flaws will bring a deeper meaning to what goes on in this new world.

Chara, Having seen the events of the future, they chose a new path. They didn't follow through with the original plan of taking the souls and overthrowing the surface.

Instead, Chara lived a pretty happy life growing up alongside Asriel and other monsters.

Chara remained deeply curious but had no control over the timeline, so there was no room to experiment.

The world was also quite different. As Chara grew up, they carefully analyzed their new environment and uncovered strange new truths.

For instance, they eventually discovered that Sans still had the power of the merged soul within him. There was something unsettling about that, so Chara decided to avoid him if they could help it. Chara can —so it's possible Sans could, too.

The events of the fallen children that were slaughtered never occurred in this world. Chara grew up in this new timeline, following different paths and meeting other human children to talk

to.

Though the children were kind, Chara’s deep-rooted hatred for humans still haunted them—shaped by everything they had experienced before falling into the Underground. Because of this, they kept their distance whenever they could.

The New World. As mentioned, Chara’s new choices meant no fallen children were killed.

The king welcomed all the human children into the castle to live peacefully with Asgore, Toriel, Asriel and some other monsters.

Most of the monsters grew fond of the humans. "Maybe living in the Underground wouldn't be so bad with all this new company." Is what some monsters thought.

The King Asgore addressed the kingdom:

“I know you're all wondering what I plan to do with the humans staying here—and what we’ll do about the barrier..."

"But I will not harm them."

"I will not take their souls or lives."

"Especially not the lives of children—My children."

"No one will."

"I truly hope that one day we can break the barrier—perhaps with technology—but that this will not happen through the power of human souls."

"And that’s a Monster King’s promise.”

While many monsters were upset at idea of never seeing the stars again, and they trusted Their King.

But not all monsters were in agreement.

A resistance formed—powerful mages, scientists, and soldiers—who saw the king’s mercy as betrayal.

They seized Leaffall Village (a reimagined version of Snowdin) and began forming their territories, guarded and fortified.

They were extremists. They would experiment with living subjects making the lives of the innocent and their own allies a living hell.

THE NOW:

In the current playable timeline, the kingdoms people has moved into and around the Royal Castle (New Home). Due to Leaffall’s takeover, there wasn’t enough room—so even the castle itself was crowded.

The Resistance’s goal: capture the humans living inside the castle, use them to break the barrier, and conquer the surface.

Many characters have changed—some in small ways, others drastically. These changes ripple across the story and affect how this version of Undertale plays out.

☆ What Is The "FINAL RESET"? ☆

It’s an event created by Sans after absorbing one of the human souls to defeat Frisk. It made a new world with big and small changes, leaving the old one behind.

☆ What Happened To Flowey? ☆

Flowey was taken taken to void, where Frisk ended up because they caused errors.

Asriel is technically a separate character, so their personalities split. Asriel became brave and independent, while Flowey grew more afraid and obsessed.

Flowey does eventually come to the new world to hunt Frisks ghost, and because Frisk follows the "Player," Flowey is hunting "you."(Frisk technically takes Chara's place as the guide)

There’s should be a lot more to come. I still need to go deeper into the changes of the locations.

I need to mention the different factions that are run by the Resistance.

possible endings is something I'm interested in getting into. A lot of this is just the pre-story. We’ve barely scratched the surface!

Summary Of How Broken Sans Came to Be

In Brokentale, Sans became purple, merged with a human soul, cracked his skull, and had inverted clothing colours — due to a catastrophic glitch in the timeline.

During a genocide run, Flowey, witnessing Frisk’s endless self-sacrifices, intervened at the critical moment by stopping Frisk’s final blow against Sans. Flowey’s interference caused an unexpected glitch that destabilised the game’s world. Frisk’s strength grew abnormally, and as Sans fled to Asgore for help, the world began crumbling. In the chaos, Asgore accidentally dropped a human soul, and Sans fell into a corrupted void of code along with it.

While falling unconscious through the void, the human soul fused with Sans’ soul, saving his life. He then crashed into a colour palette within the void, causing his body to shift colours and crack his skull permanently.

Meanwhile, a forced reset was initiated by a hidden figure (implied to be Gaster), rebooting the timeline. Frisk retained their strength after the reset, and Sans was hurled back into his world, changed but alive.

Realising the world was still unstable and Frisk still dangerous, Sans discovered new powers: creating stable platforms and barriers to protect others from falling into the deadly void. Ultimately, Sans confronted Frisk, trapping them permanently in a void to prevent further destruction. Frisk accepted their fate, but Chara’s spirit survived separately.

Using his newfound power, Sans initiated the FINAL RESET, hoping to create a perfect, peaceful world. However, after the reset, he found himself in an unfamiliar new reality, unsure of what exactly had happened — his memories mostly erased but haunted by lingering instincts.

This marks how Sans became Broken Sans in Brokentale.

Sans | Brokentale Name: Glitched

In Brokentale, Broken Sans can transform into a powerful alternate form called Glitched.

This form reveals the full, destructive potential of his merged souls, greatly increasing his strength and magical abilities. However, he uses this form sparingly — either in emergencies or when practising — because although his energy seems limitless, overusing it risks self-destruction.

While transformed, his personality changes noticeably, almost as if another being is in control. Interestingly, if he remains inactive (not using magic), he naturally regenerates HP and recovers from exhaustion over time.

However, if Sans stays in the Glitched form too long and reaches his limit, reverting back leaves him extremely weak, slow, and suffering from temporary memory loss due to extreme exhaustion. Fortunately, in his weakened state, his magic becomes less draining to use.

Sans | Brokentale Name: Breaking Point

"Breaking Point" is a form Broken Sans enters after exiting his Glitched form if he has used a lot of magic but not enough to fatally exhaust himself. In this state, Broken Sans becomes mentally unstable and descends into madness, making his attacks wild, erratic, and highly unpredictable.

While not as magically powerful as his Glitched form, his strength in Breaking Point sures his regular and second stages.

His overwhelming goal becomes pure destruction of what he hates most, stopping at nothing to achieve it.

In this form, Broken Sans can endure far more physical punishment. His shattered mental state numbs pain and converts it into greater strength, making him significantly more durable and dangerous.

Payrus | Brokentale Name: Papyrus Royal Assassin

Brokentales Papyrus is very different from Undertale's Papyrus, Broken Papyrus is one of the most well trained assassins in the underground and one of the most high ranking officers in the royal guard. Papyrus started becoming so dark when he was younger. As a kid, he was taken by the monster resistance and a few other monsters as well. Only a few were chosen for the assassin training. He was difficult to teach because of his very kind soul, but the reason he was chosen is because of his dedication and his strength. Papyrus didn't know it, but he was a lot stronger than he would ever know.

Papyrus was being trained for destroying humans. Before he could finish his training, Sans finally found him before it was too late. Sans would have confronted the resistance, but he knew that he needed to get papyrus out of there. By then, papyrus had already killed and became a little older and only became darker. He would drift away from his brother and his friends. He looked for a way to avoid any kind of relationship with anyone, and he eventually found the job he was looking for.

Asgore new papyrus wasn't comfortable so he assigned him to the royal guard as a body gaurd and escort for the humans, Asgore thought this would be good for him since he thought he won't be doing much action so it could get out of his system but as time ed and the resistance grew stronger more assassinations were happening making papyrus have more cravings for the fight and they can become scary when they are angry.

Undyne | Brokentale Name: Undyne The Siren

My AU version of Undyne Undertale!!

Broken Undyne is similar to the original, but their attitude and what they want are completely different. As you can see from above, they are singing and wearing a dress. In my AU, they want to sing for people as a hobby and want to accomplish being a largely noticed singer as a goal. They find it difficult because they are confident as singers, but they have an important image to maintain as one of the most naturally talented guards the kingdom has. They try and keep their public singing to minimum of around 5 people so it doesn't become largely noticed by too many people but they struggle with that too because they actually bring more people in just because they like their singing. The reason she took up singing was because a friend of hers told her that they could do anything that they like and they were very close to quiting the guard until her friend decided to the resistance after the announcement, this destroyed her confidence and the feeling of betrayal made Undyne take up both jobs with the priority of the kingdom first. Undynes appearance, and as I mentioned, her attitude is different as well. Her attitude is more relaxed but still very confident. As for her appearance, she doesn't have an eye patch and her eye is fine, another thing that's different is her skin, her skin is red and her natural hair colour is purple, the hair style is a little different from the original as well( The image above shows that it's white and blue but that's just her her hair dye).
