Hallows Eve

:ghost:

Hallows Eve now known as Halloween has been

around for more Halloween is among the oldest traditions in the world as it touches on an essential element of the human condition: the relationship between the living and the dead. Halloween all started as a pre-Christian Celtic Festival. It was called Samhain or "summer's end. " Samhain was first held around November first, which marked the final day of harvest. Samhain was a celebration to celebrate the crossing of spirits over into another world, but people in Ireland, the U. K, and used this celebration to ward off ghosts. They would wear costumes just as we do today and lite sacrificial bonfires.

Halloween is among the oldest traditions in the world as it touches on an essential element of the human condition: the relationship between the living and the dead. Every recorded civilization has created some form of ritual observance focused on what happens to people when they die, where they go, and how the living should best honor those who have ed or respond to the dead who seem unwilling or unable to move on.

Countries around the world today celebrate Halloween in one form or another, from Mexico’s Day of the Dead to China’s Tomb Sweeping Day.

─ Rant ─

︵︵︵︵︵︵︵︵︵︵

a trend that recently made it’s rounds on tiktok was the hot chocolate bombs! they are these two half circles of chocolate with cocoa powder and marshmallows on the inside that melts into warm milk to add a little flair to the classic hot chocolate drink! it’s come at- what i believe is- the perfect time! it’s here for the holidays in some of the roughest times in the world’s history. a tasty little treat to give the briefest of joys in this endless cycle. and from what i understand, it’s not too difficult to make as long as you have the proper ingredients and the circle trays! i’ve been dying to try it for a while now, but i lack the proper mold for the chocolate. in my area, costco was selling them, but they went by quickly, and my family hates it there. much too crowded and in your face. i like it though! mainly their hotdogs. they got rid of their churros, but i use to love those too! back on topic! the hot chocolate bombs! i think they’d make a good gift for this christmas season! i bet there is a way to make them perfect for thanksgiving too! if you’re an american, of course. i’ll have to try my own hand in it, but there’s probably a pumpkin mix out there- and pumpkin and chocolate go surprisingly well together! of course, i could always just dye/get orange chocolate and make it more fall-themed, cause hot chocolate is good year round in my opinion! even summer, but it’s generally too hot for it. anyways; that has been the end of my small rant about the hot chocolate bombs! hope you enjoyed!

book/character review

Nandor from What We Do In The Shadows (tv)

a good halloween movie or show is What We Do In The Shadows- the title stays the same for both. in the tv show, which has only recently been released, and only has 2 seasons, there are four “main” vampires. i hesitate to say four main ones, because colin- an energy vampire- has only recently become a bigger character, but he is one of the vampire roommates nonetheless. the main vampire we will be focusing on is nandor. nandor, lazslo, colin, and nadjia are all vampires who share a house in Staten Island. nandor, specifically, have a familiar named guillermo who hopes to be turned into a vampire, but no such luck yet. this plays an interesting role in nandor and his familiar’s dynamic, as guillermo gets antsier about when he’s going to be turned, and nandor only cares about keeping his familiar. it’s a running gag in the show and movie that familiars hardly get turned as promised, because it’s a waste of good labor, and the vampires just don’t want to. there are, however, random characters who do get turned, which only serves to infuriate guillermo more. nandor comes off as oblivious, uncaring- but trying his best-, and down-right ignorant of guillermo or what the other vampires want. it’s hilarious in it’s own respect. nandor has a rather interesting history of being a warlord from the Ottoman Empire. he is the self-appoint leader as of such, and often doesn’t understand modern human things- although the same thing can be said for the other vampires, excluding colin, who feeds off annoying modern humans. nandor acts proud and “brave” at times, but is mostly hilarious in his flaws. if you don’t like horror, i would definitely recommend this vampiric show and nandor. as long as you don’t mind mature content.

─ Lyric Analysis ─

︵︵︵︵︵︵︵︵︵︵

Song: Half Alive by Blackbear

You barely left me with the air to breathe

You took it all and now I see

The truth, see through your plastic covered lies

I'm driving through Mulholland

Wish I swerved and never fall in

Should've seen right through the gap between her thighs

Take my heart, my clothes

Take everything I own

Spend my money, spend my time

Lay me down to rest, lay me down to die

No one makes it out alive

There's a sense of loss in himself as the memories of a failed relationship hold him back from moving on, blackbear talks about how after removing himself from the relationship, it turned out to be a toxic one.

I'm at the bar downtown

The one we used to go to all the time (time)

Already half way dead, the way you left me

Girl, I'm half alive

Yeah, I'm half alive

And about that night

And about that night

I was super drunk

I was hella high

I'm at the bar downtown

The one we used to go to all the time

And I'm half alive

The idea that it derived from his own choices from previous experiences , like meeting her in a bar, creates a sense of emptiness inside of him. This is a common recurring theme in blackbear’s songs, especially around the idea of breakups. It visualises the idea some younger adults go through, falling in and out of relationships, only to start one the same way as the last.

A little bit longer, I'll be waiting

I'm a goner, f*ck this fake sh**

Why you let me down forever?

I wanna be honest

Girl, quit playin'

Can we try and try and save this?

Turn me to a loner

Girl, you can take my heart, my clothes

Take everything I own

Spend my money, spend my time

Lay me down to rest, lay me down to die

No one makes it out alive

Despite being aware of the long term effects and damage that came with the relationship, there is still a sense of bitter longing after the separation, wanting to repair what you last had so that there is something to fill the void. An important end to this section is that it ends with ‘no one makes it out alive’ connoting that even the other person in the relationship, the girl , probably has some desire or misses parts of their pairing as well.

Half way dead, just the way you left me

I'll be half way dead, just the way you left me

I'll be half way dead, just the way you left me

I'll be half way dead

I'm at the bar downtown

The one we used to go to all the time (time)

Already half way dead, the way you left me

Girl, I'm half alive

Yeah, I'm half alive

And about that night

And about that night

I was super drunk

I was hella high

I'm at the bar downtown

The one we used to go to all the time

And I'm half alive

The repetition is common among many songs, but the idea to take from it is that of all things, he still mostly blames the girl for the way things ended, despite his own mistakes involved as well. It is not a new theme to have a hate to love emotion about somebody, and it can be from many different situations

Like always, you all did amazing on this! The song chosen for this issue was quite interesting; I didn’t expect such a minimal backtrack compared to the heavy name. I had thought it might’ve been metal! Great work. :two_hearts:
