Our little hope

Catty and Bratty, a cat monster and an alligator monster, were lying in the hotel bed, asleep. Catty yawned and meowed something about Mac and cheese. Then she rolled over and looked at the alarm clock. It was 8:00am. Catty yowled in surprise and sat bolt upright. “Like, Bratty! Wake up!” she whined, shaking the alligator vigorously.

Bratty sat up, rubbing her eyes. “What is it…what’s going on…,” she said, letting out a huge yawn that showed every single one of her monstrous teeth.

“Breakfast started 10 minuets ago! We have to like, eat and stuff,” meowed Catty, flipping over to the other side of the bed and pulling on a pair of jeans. Bratty groaned and got up, going to the bathroom to brush her many teeth. “No time,” screeched Catty, “the shelter opens in an hour!” She snatched the toothbrush from Bratty’s hand.

Bratty rolled her eyes and let out an indignant, “Cattyyy!”as she was pulled out the door and into the elevator of the hotel by her energetic partner. As the elevator doors closed, Catty bounced on the balls of her feet, humming a little tune. Bratty’s stomach growled. “You know what? I’m like…pretty hungry, too. LET’S EAT!” she shouted, as the elevator doors slid open, and she rushed out excitedly, dragging Catty behind her.

As they walked into the dining area, however, they both lost their enthusiasm just a bit, due to the hostile looks they were getting. Beads of magic in the shape of sweat rolled down Bratty’s forehead, and she reached back to grab Catty’s hand. Catty gave her hand a little squeeze. Catty and Bratty walked over to the buffet line and grabbed plates and silverware. All the while they were getting their food, they were completely aware of all the whispering done by parents to their children. One kid pointed in awe and said, “Mommy, Mommy look!” The mother quickly hushed the child and pulled them away, giving Catty and Bratty a look that was all too familiar: ‘you, are not, welcome here’.

Bratty and Catty had no sooner seated themselves at a small table for two near the window, when they heard a furious whisper. “You let their kind in here?!” Bratty looked over to see a tall white man, having a heated discussion with the desk manager.

“Sir, please, I need you to calm down,” said the manager, a strong looking Asian woman who looked like she knew all too well what kind of situation she was in.

“Who are YOU to tell me what to do?!” said the man, bringing his fist down on the desk, sending pens and sticky notes flying.

“Sir, please, calm down!” she insisted, keeping her poise and cool composure.

Catty stood up and took a step toward the man, but Bratty grabbed her arm and shook her head. Catty broke free and stepped right up to the man. “Hey, you!” she yelled, getting in his face, “Like, shut your dumb face!” The man recoiled in disgust, whipping around violently to face Catty.

“EXCUSE ME?!” he shouted. People were starting to stare. Bratty caught up to Catty and grabbed her arm again.

“C’mon, let’s like, go…,” Bratty said, almost pleading.

“You heard me right!” said Catty, folding her arms. “We’re, like, totally wicked cool! And you can’t tell us what to do!” The man took a threatening step toward her, shaking with anger.

Bratty tugged on Catty’s arm again. “Let’s go.”

The desk manager was picking up the phone. “Sir, please. Calm down or I will have to call the police.”

The tall man ignored her. “I will NOT,” he shouted, spraying spit on Catty’s face, “sleep in the same building,” he swung his arm fiercely to the side, “as a monster!” He swiped forcefully at Catty’s face. Catty stumbled back, her cheek red from where the man had hit her, and her eyes contracted into slits. She hissed and her claws un-sheathed. Bratty, panicking, picked up her small friend and rushed her to the door. She glanced back at the desk manager who was dialing 911. Then, the sliding doors opened, and Catty and Bratty rushed out of the hotel.

Once they were safely in their car, they both sat there for a moment, taking a deep breath. “Let’s…,” said Catty, in a small voice, “let’s go to the shelter.”

Bratty looked at her, with eyes that said, ‘you sure?’ Catty nodded. Bratty gave Catty a kiss on the forehead and smiled. “You like, never give up, do you?” she said and grinned.

“LIKE HELL I DON’T!” shouted Catty as they drove off into the morning.

Catty took out her phone and typed “Happy Days Kitty Shelter” into the GPS. Bratty glanced over at Catty and her smile widened. “Okay, take a left,” said Catty, pointing out the window at an exit. After a few more turns, they arrived. Catty jumped out of the car and shouted, “KITTIES, HERE I COME!”. Bratty followed her a little less enthusiastically, but she still looked excited to have a new addition to the family.

When they entered the shelter, the woman at the desk gave a little start. She quickly picked up her phone and started dialing, her hands shaking. When they walked up to her, she started shaking more, and her voice was jittery. “T-they’re coming closer! Hurry!” Then she noticed the reproachful glances she was getting from the two monsters and quickly put down the phone.

“Uh...we’d like to adopt a cat or whatever,” said Bratty, trying to play it cool.

“O-o-ok...D-Diana’ll b-be down sh-sh-sh-shortly…,” she stuttered and looked to the next customer. “C-c-can I hel-help you?” she asked him, trying to ignore Catty and Bratty. The new guy just stared at the Catty and Bratty. His phone dropped out of his hand and bounced off the floor. Luckily for him, the screen didn’t crack. Bratty and Catty just looked at each other, sighed, and walked over to sit on the bench.

They sat for a few moments in sad silence, when a woman with blonde hair and bright red lipstick walked up to them and grinned “You must be the two monsters I’ve heard so much about!” she said. “The woman at the desk told me you were here!”

Catty and Bratty stood up. “Yep,” Catty meowed.

“Awww! You’re so cute!” The woman bent down to Catty’s eye level. Catty could see a silver name tag that said “Diana”. “Who’s a good kitty?” She patted Catty’s head.

Bratty shoved her hand off Catty’s head. “Screw off.” she said, quietly.

Diana ignored her. “Now if you’ll come right this way. Come!” She beckoned them like she would a dog. Bratty rolled her eyes and followed. Catty was staring daggers at the woman, and her claws were unsheathed just a bit. Diana led them into a hallway that looked upon a room full of cats and kittens alike. Catty smooshed her face against the glass. “Were you adopted?” said Diana to Bratty.

“Like, what are you talking about?” said Bratty.

“You’re an alligator.”

“So?”

“Two cats can’t make an alligator, can they?” she said, laughing as if Bratty was being silly.

Catty turned around. “What are you two talking about?” she said, curiously.

“I was just saying how...ahem...nice...it was of your cute little kitty parents to let an...,” she coughed, “an ALLIGATOR into your home!” She said alligator a little forced, like it was something vile. “Um, what...?” said Catty, confused and annoyed.

“I just meant...it’s odd to see such different species as sisters!” Diana said, like it was obvious.

“Uh...we’re NOT sisters,” said Catty, getting angry.

“Friends then,” Diana said. Bratty looked at Catty, knowing what was about to happen, and she tried to stop it before it got out of Catty’s mouth that they weren’t friends either. Too late.

“Bratty,” said Catty, pointing at her. “Is my GIRLFRIEND. And she, like, is Amazing! So are her parents and every other alligator I’ve ever known!” she hissed.

The woman tightened up. “I’m not...sure I understand!” she said through her forced smile.

Catty jumped up and gave Bratty a light kiss, right on the lips. “Ya understand now?” said Catty, her hand on her hip. Bratty blushed and facepalmed.

Diana’s smile turned cold, and she gave them an icy stare. “Right this way please,” she said, turning around stiffly and opening the door to the room with cats. Catty and Bratty looked at each other, giving a little sigh of relief, and entered the room.

As soon as they entered the room, something caught their eye. It was a dark brown Scottish Fold kitten that was staring right at them with large, inquisitive eyes. As Bratty and Catty stared in wonder, almost mesmerized by those huge black pupils, the Scottish Fold yawned, got up, and trotted over to them. Catty made a little squealing noise and plopped down on the floor to pet it. It purred and rubbed against her hand and seemed to immediately love them. Bratty bend down too and slid her hand across its back. Then, the kitten rolled over, presenting their belly to be pet. It purred even louder. As if it didn’t matter that they weren’t human. As if it could care less if they were both female. As if it loved them for who they were.

Catty picked it up while Catty pet it and squealed again. “We’ll adopt this one,” said Bratty, to the woman. All annoyance had melted from Bratty’s voice.

“Take it,” said the woman in an icy voice. “Take it and leave.” Catty smiled even wider than she was already.

“Wicked! Thanks!” said Bratty, smirking and shoving past the woman. Catty and Bratty both giggled when they got to the car.

“What a moron,” said Catty, petting the new addition to their family.

“I know right?!” said Bratty, giving Catty a smooch. Then, she also gave the kitten a smooch. “What should we name em’?” she said, grinning.

After a few moments of consideration, Catty said, very carefully, “Kibo.”.

Bratty nodded. “Watashitachi no chisana kibo,” Bratty said. “Our little hope.”
