A young girl looked in the mirror. She smiled and grabbed a hair-tie, using her other hand to hold her hair in a ponytail. She slipped the hair-tie over her hair, twisting it and sliding it back over multiple times until it was tightly held up. She grabbed her pieces of hair and pulled them apart, further tightening her ponytail. Her hair was long, reaching past her shoulders when pinned up. It was curly and dyed a deep black. Her eyes were a dull gray, but they could lighten into a dazzling blue. Her skin was a fair color, but she could tan easily. It was rare for her to get a sunburn. She was fairly thin all over despite eating till she pops. She must have a good metabolism.
Her mom called for her from downstairs, to which she responded with, “Coming!” She twirled around and opened her door, leaving her room, and closing the door behind her. She ran down the stairs and to the kitchen. She slid into her chair at the table, her breakfast sitting in front of her. It was pancakes smothered in butter and maple syrup. Her mouth watered as she grabbed the fork resting next to her plate. She looked up at her mom sat down across from her, smiling. The girl looked back down at her pancakes and cut a piece off of them, shoving the piece in her mouth. She kicked her legs, her eyes sparkling. Her mother laughed.
“Are you enjoying those pancakes, Sarah?” Sarah’s mother said, her elbows sitting on the table, her head propped on her hands. Sarah nodded vigorously and stuffed more pancakes in her mouth. She shoveled pieces into her mouth, chewing and swallowing quickly. Sarah’s mother was named, “Veronica”. Veronica had beautiful green eyes. Her hair was a dark brown, and it was curly, but she usually kept it in a bun seeing as she cooked and cleaned most of the time. She was a stay-at-home mom. Her skin was incredibly light. Most of the time, she was seen wearing an apron over her clothes. Sarah rarely ever seen her without it.
Veronica chuckled, watching her daughter. She loved her three children dearly. They all varied in personality, demeanor, and style. The oldest was Jack. He was a slow-going, gentle boy. He was an average height and weight. He looked like his father the most. He had blonde hair, striking blue eyes, and light skin. His hair was the average short cut and was wavy. Freckles lined over his cheeks and nose. He smiled often, rarely being seen showing any other emotion than happiness. He was aged sixteen. The next was Vicky. She was the moodiest of the three. She was often angry or annoyed. She stayed in her room most of the time, on her phone, computer, or a console she owned, which was many. The family was in between poor and middle class seeing as their dad was a cop. Vicky was tall and slender- taller than both Jack and Sarah. She had short, light brown hair that went down to her shoulder blades. She had straight hair. Her eyes were green like her mother’s. She was aged fifteen. The last was the short, thin Sarah. She was closer to being overweight than to being entirely skinny, though, and she was incredibly short- about 5’0. She was aged twelve.
Sarah quickly stood up and brought her dishes to the sink, cleaning them. She turned and ran out of the kitchen, up the stairs, and into her room. She grabbed her small backpack meant for when she would venture out, and ran back downstairs, closing her bedroom door behind her. She went to the front door and opened it. She stood in the doorway and stared at the kitchen.
“Bye mom! I'm going out!” Sarah called to her mom. She waved as her mom responded with, “Goodbye! Have fun! Make sure to be back by lunchtime!” Sarah paused before lying and saying, “I will…!” She wasn't planning to be back that soon. She was going to Mt. Ebott, the mysterious mountain that many kids disappeared around and never return, their remains never being found either.
Sarah sighed and closed the door. She went down the steps and made her way to the sidewalk along the roadside. She turned left and began to walk in that direction. She hoped no one would stop her for long, or realize what she was doing and force her back to her house. She had already thought of numerous lies to get her way out of any situation. She wasn't usually the lying type, but today was different. She had felt a strange, overwhelming feeling of sadness and pain before seeing a premonition of someone being killed. It frightened her at first, but she knew she had to help them. She hadn't recognized any of the creatures, or the scenery within her premonition, but something inside her told her it was within Mt. Ebott. Literally. A voice whispered the words, “Go to Mt. Ebott and save them,” in her head. At first, she thought she was going crazy, but she soon realized that even if she was crazy, it could have been real and someone could be in danger. She couldn't bear to think that someone was going to get hurt without her trying to stop it! It wasn't like her to just ignore such things. She was so caring and comionate… She couldn't allow such a thing to happen. Not on her watch!
Sarah blinked back into reality. She heard her best friend’s voice before seeing them. It was Charlie. Sarah blinked and gasped, realizing she had been mindlessly walking. Charlie looked really concerned. She tapped on Sarah’s forehead.
“Anyone in there?” Charlie chirped at her. Sarah slightly pushed Charlie’s hand away and giggled. Charlie smiled.
“Thank god! I thought you had completely lost it,” Charlie remarked. Sarah smirked.
“Don't be fooled, human! It is I, the great Disguiser! I have been put on this planet to fool you humans! It seems I have succeeded!” Sarah slid her front foot forward, her back foot backwards, and put one hand in the middle of her chest and the other out diagonal from her. She smirked as Charlie laughed and gently, yet playfully, pushed her. Sarah slightly stumbled back, laughing.
“So, where you goin’?” Charlie questioned, still chuckling as she spoke. Sarah paused before smiling and responding, “Just over to my cousin’s house to play some new video games he got.” Charlie marveled at her.
“Can I come?” Charlie gave Sarah the puppy eyes. Sarah shifted, uncomfortably. She had to quickly think up a lie. She just hoped it was a good enough lie to by Charlie, especially seeing as Charlie was an extremely observant person. She could easily pick a lie from a truth, making her eating yo the previous lie odd.
“My cousin isn't comfortable with me bringing random people to her house, and so are my aunt and my uncle. They just don't know you well, but maybe next time! Anyway, I've got to go,” Sarah smiled as she spoke. Charlie looked away and grunted. She made a snorting noise before standing up straight.
“Puh… Fine,” Charlie looked back in Sarah’s eyes before speaking again. “But you better bring me next time.” Sarah nodded and slipped past her. She could have sworn she heard Charlie mutter “liar” under her breath, but she shrugged it off and kept going. No one was going to get in the way of her and that poor child. She strolled on, eventually reaching the end of the sidewalk. This was where the path got rigid. From here on was forest terrain, which, ittedly, Sarah was accustomed to due to her constant venturing; however, she was never allowed to go too far, let alone all the way to the mountain! She still wasn't, but as she felt before, it wasn't going to stop her. If she got in trouble, so be it. There was absolutely no way she was going to allow herself to know that a living, human being was going to die without helping them. No one deserved to that. She believed that if you knew someone was in danger, you should go out of your way to help them. And that's exactly what she was doing. She wasn't about to be accused of being a hypocrite, let only allow a person to die!
As she walked, twigs and leaves snapped and crackled under her feet. She pushed branches out if her way as she ventured deeper and deeper into the forest. Every now and then, she had to stop and hide after hearing an animal. There were predators in the forest, ones like wolves and mountain lions. She ended up slathering her skin in mud to cover her sent. It would be easy to brush off once it dried.
Sarah glanced over to the side. She did a double take and looked again. She seen human footprints around the size of her own. They were slightly covered in animal tracks which meant the footprints were a little old. They didn't seem to be too old, however. They were probably about a day to three days old.
Suddenly, she heard a twig snap behind her. She flinched and immediately dove into the bushes. Her heartbeat increased as she watched through the leaves. She covered her mouth to keep herself from breathing in a heavy manner. There was nothing there… She waited for a couple more minutes before deciding the coast was clear. She slowly emerged from the bushes. She looked around, paranoid. She would have to be more cautious now. She took small, scared steps, staying light on her feet. She looked up to see the sun was getting close to setting. She gasped and started to walk faster. She kept her head on a swivel, keeping her steps light, staying at a constant quick pace. She didn't want to stay out for too long and worry her parents or get in trouble.
The farther she went into the forest, the stronging the need she felt to get to the mountain. Every now-and-then, she would hear something and hide, putting her behind. She would become more paranoid and cautious with each occurrence. She was scared, but she had to keep going. She had to help that poor human. It was her job- her duty. She had to keep going, for if she didn't and the human died, it would be her fault for knowing and still not saving them. It would be her whom was the killer. Even if other people didn't consider her to be, SHE would feel guilty and consider herself a killer. She couldn't let it happen… she just couldn't.
By the time she reached the mountain, the sun was setting behind the mountains. The sky was a beautiful orange and pink. The light and colors reflected off the clouds, giving them a beautiful orange hue. She smiled at the beauty. She never realized the sunset was so great before… She shook everything out of her head. She had to hurry into the mountain.
She began to look for the hole into the mountain, the one that was fabled about. She heard rocks start to tumble down- just a few pebbles. She watched where they came from. More fell. She was frozen in place, staring. It didn't take long before she found the source… A mountain lion. It appeared around the turn on the mountain. Sarah’s eyes widened, her heart began to pound, she began hyperventilating. She looked around, her head whipping from side to side, panic flowing through her body. She caught sight of a hole. She had been out of sight of the mountain lion- at least she thought… She heard it growl at her. She slowly turned her head to see the cougar staring directly at her. She began to shake. The cougar pounced forward and began to charge at her. Sarah dove away and stumbled towards the hole, her feet slipping. The rock was hard to grip her shoes onto. She grabbed onto the rocks above her, pulling her back up each time it happened. The cougar had a better time seeing as it lived here and was accustomed to the slippery rocks. It slowly got closer to her. It was two feet behind it by now, while she was three feet away from the hole. She freaked out, her vision starting to darken. She was in a full blown panic attack. Just one foot away from the hole. That was far she was when the cougar leaped at her. She choked, the fear coursing through her entire body. It felt like the fear WAS her body. Her life flashes before her eyes as she jumped towards the hole. Everything slowed before her. It was as if time itself had slowed down…
She made it to the hole. She continued down into it. She turned while in the air, her back facing the ground. She seen the mountain lion looming over the hole. It growled and turned. She watched as it's tail disappeared. Tears flowed through the air above her, moving off of her face. Her vision soon went completely black. She hadn't come out of the panic attack… She just hoped she would be ok.
