What's your favorite Ghibli film?

You think I would say Howl's Moving Castle, considering that's my profile theme, but you would be wrong! Don't worry, I love all the films, it's just some have left more of a lasting impression upon me. c:

I actually don't have just ONE favorite Ghibli movie! I have multiple depending on different aspects that make a movie. Does that make sense? Let me explain...

My favorite Ghibli movie when it comes to animation has to be Princess Mononoke. You know when you're watching an anime and it gets to an intensely packed action scene and the quality of the drawings drop significantly? Well, I feel that doesn't happen once in this film. Despite the crazy amount of things that can be on screen at any one point throughout this film, the animation seems to remain smooth and fluid. They definitely didn't back away from it!

My favorite Ghibli movie for the plotline would be The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. It starts sweet and wholesome but quickly develops into a movie about serious topics, such as being unhappy with your life and being forced to do things you don't enjoy. And to make it even more moving is the fact that the film doesn't have a happy ending. This one made me bawl my eyes out simply because I felt for Kaguya and wanted her to finally be able to enjoy herself and live the way she wanted to...

The Ghibli movie with my favorite soundtrack is Castle in the Sky. When I watched this for the first time and the strings hit my ears, my eyes became watery and my heart raced because it was so moving. The music is so beautiful in this film that it empowers me and elevates my senses, yet also makes me cry in a bittersweet way. That's not the only reason, though. I'm a complete sucker for motifs in music and the main theme can be heard in some way throughout most of the tracks. It may seem unimportant to some, but to me it creates a level of symbolism that everything is connected and ties into how the characters and story develops. Hisaishi really outdid himself, and I look up to the man.

Favorite Ghibli movie for the setting would have to be Ponyo. I loooove water (I even considered being a marine biologist at one point!) and the creatures that live in it, and considering most of this movie occurs in or around water, it's an easy pick! It's quite breathtaking to see what kind of creatures Miyazaki dreamt up, seeing as we only know about 5% of what's in the ocean~

My favorite Ghibli film for the characters is definitely Howl's Moving Castle. Almost every single character in this movie is relevant, important, and plays a role in the plot. Not only that, but almost all of them have their own character arcs and developments! Even the smaller characters! Now that's rare to find... I also really enjoy how the characters are there for a purpose, not just the stereotypical roles of "comedy relief" or "love rival," etc etc. Flaws are recognized and pushed past, insecurities are destroyed, and conflict is properly resolved. All that and more makes me love this film!

I could probably cover more aspects to cover more of the Ghibli films, but then this would be going on forever... And I know it's already crazy long. Sorry about that!~
