The World Collision Theory

Hello, UTA! It's April reporting in today with a theory post! In this theory, I will be discussing how Undertale and Deltarun relate. If you haven't played Deltarune yet, I suggest you play it or watch a play-through before reading this post! It contains a ton of spoilers for Deltarune! Though, I more so suggest playing it. The experience is different than Undertale- it's actually quite unique. Anyways, allow me to get into the theory now!

Where does Deltarune take place?

To start off, I would like to point out that Deltarune most likely isn't a prequel OR a sequel. In fact, I believe it's a whole new universe! Toby Fox himself has stated that this is a new world. He states, "To rephrase that, DELTARUNE's world is a different one. With different characters, that have lived different lives. A whole new story will happen..." So, knowing this is a new world, and the characters have lived different lives, let me expand on my idea. I believe Undertale and Deltarune are two different universes with their own sets of dimensions. Furthermore, I believe the world that Deltarune takes place in didn't originally have the characters we see in Undertale in it... There had to be something that happened that made these characters transfer over.

So, how DID the Undertale characters make their way into the Deltarune world?

The universes collided.

Yes, I theorize that the entire universe these games are set in collided, transferring information between that two worlds. At first, when playing through Deltarune, it seems to be a sequel of Undertale with a different main character. However, after you save the Lightners and Darkners, you and Susie find your way back to your own world. Personally, I explored before ending the chapter. I spoke to every monster I seen, which means that I eventually spoke to Sans, Catty, and Bratty. These three characters are very important in this theory. They are what made me doubt that Deltarune happens within the same universe as Undertale.

Catty's Importance

When you ask Catty about her neighbor (who is Bratty), she says the following:

As you can see, Catty appears to dislike Bratty, while as in Undertale, the two are the best of friends. Now, it seems they don't completely know each other, and it goes to the extant that they talk poorly of each other. If this were the same universe, Catty would know the name of her neighbor. In addition, she probably would have mentioned, or at least alluded to, some sort of falling out between the two. I mean, Catty does seem to be gossip, so wouldn't you expect her to spill the beans? Why doesn't she speak about it? Simple: it never happened. They never needed to speak to each other, because... DUH- different world, different lives!

Bratty's Importance

When you go next door to Bratty and ask her about her neighbor she says the following:

Bratty also seems to not really know her neighbor. In fact, she mentions how much she dislikes her, basically saying the same thing Catty did, but this time TOWARDS Catty and not being FROM Catty. This reinstates that the two don't know each other. The most they know about each other is that the other seems to be a "copycat". Furthermore, Bratty speaks poorly of Catty, meaning they're not best friends. Bratty ALSO seems to be a gossip, so why didn't even she spill the beans about a falling out? As I've already said, it never happened. This shows that the world from Undertale and the world from Deltarune are different.

The Importance of Sans

When you go to speak to Sans, you have to speak to him a bit before getting the option to talk to him about "Friends". After you choose the option "Friends", he states that him and his brother have just moved into town. He then asks you if you have anyone you would suggest meeting. You get the option, "No One", "Your Teacher", "Your Mom", and "You". If you choose "Your Teacher", Sans talks about meeting Alphas. If you choose "Your Mom", Sans talks about meeting Toriel. Now, when reading the dialogue, notice that Sans speaks in a way that shows he has JUST met the two.

As you can see, Sans states that he met Toriel the night before. The way he speaks shows that this is the first time he has met her. Not only that, but to back track, this is his first time living in the town. If he had lived there before, he would have already known Toriel and Alphys. Also, if this were the same universe as the one in Undertale, he would have known her. This further proves that this universe could be the result of two different universes colliding. Now, we have two individual worlds with one mixed, which is the one Deltarune is set in.
