You Are My Baby (II)

Ling looked at little bao in disbelief. A tear

rolled down her eye and her mind was unable

to what she had just witnessed. Little

bao was the one reason Ling had to live on.

She pulled little bao close to her chest and

yelped in pain. As little bao was being taken

away, Ling sat there, lifeless, humming that

lullaby for bao, looking at her empty hands,

unresponsive to her surroundings.

After this incident, days ed by like a series

of montages for Ling. As she started coming

back to her senses, Ling realized that Alan and

Amy were no longer the same warm people

who had welcomed her.

They always gave her scorned looks. Every time

Ling asked if she could play with Lisa, Amy

would just say, "Sure, if you can find her," then

giggle and turn around, humming the exact

same lullaby Ling had sang when she lost

little bao.Ling was absolutely devastated and

baffled as to why Amy would hurt her like that.

The next morning, Ling woke up with a firm

intent to get all her questions answered. She

fiddled with her cup as she imagined how she

could express her displeasure. Alan interrupted

her thought process as he rattled his keys and

shouted, "We'll be back by evening, Ling!"

"I have to do this now, I just can't spare to lose

another moment," Ling mumbled. "Wait up…"

but Alan and Amy had already left so Ling decided

to follow them. She had never felt this kind of

urgency before.

Following them, she ended up at a cemetery.

She decided to turn back because this was no

place for any kind of discussion, but a young

girl caught her attention.

"Oh what a poor soul…" Ling thought.

The girl wept and said "I miss you, Mom &

Dad, I never got a chance to get to know you.”

Ling took a step forward in an attempt to console

her but her legs went weak as she read the

inscription on the tombstones.

Ling couldn't breathe as she read those words.

She got up trying to balance herself and started

walking backwards but her legs refused to function

She held a tombstone behind her for .She

wanted to run away but her mind was flooded

with questions.

"Lisa?" Ling called out, almost afraid that the

girl would respond. "LISA!" she yelled again,

but the girl didn't respond.

Ling’s legs gave way as she turned around and

looked at the tombstone she had been holding.

Those words sent a chill down her spine. Ling

couldn't believe her eyes as she read her own

name. Suddenly, it all came back to her in a flash…

"Do you mind if I play with Lisa for a while?" asked Ling.

"Sure, if you can find her!” Amy giggled as she

pointed towards Lisa, who was crawling on

the carpet.

As Ling scooped her up, Lisa had started

crying. Ling hummed the lullaby, convinced that

it would calm her down but it just seemed to

make things worse.

"I don't think it's helping, Ling, give her to me." said Amy, extending her arms.

"Stay away from my baby!" Ling retaliated

with anger, grabbing on to Lisa tightly.

"What is wrong with you? She's my baby!!

Leave her, right away!!" shouted Amy.

“Don’t take little bao away from me!” she

yelled as she ran to the kitchen.

She grabbed the cleaver and without a

second thought, slashed wildly at Amy.

“Don’t take my baby! She’s mine!”

Alan heard the commotion and he ran out

of the room to see his wife lying in a pool of

blood. He ran over to help her but Amy

pointed towards the door, "Li..Lisa..." she

whispered with her final breath.

Alan rushed towards the door and grabbed Ling.

Ling struggled as she pulled Lisa closer to her

chest. She turned around, forgetting that the

cleaver was still in her hand, she cried, “My baby!

My baby!”

The next thing she knew, she saw Alan lying

in a pool of blood, mutilated beyond recognition.

She ran thoughtlessly out of the house without

turning back. Cradling Lisa in right arm, Ling

began to soothe her crying baby. Ironically, it

was her silence that broke the chaos in Ling's

head.

ersby gathered and she stood rooted

to the round. The cleaver still in her left hand

was evidence to the heinousness of her sin.

It was something she couldn't bear to accept.

She was in denial but the blood on her hands

was her reality, she couldn't run away.

Her limbs went numb and just then, someone

snatched Lisa away from her. She had lost every

ounce of life in her. The easiest thing left to do

now was to end it all...

Ling walked out of the graveyard, horrified

contemplating her reality. She was stuck in a

loop. Her death had not ended her miseries,

instead, she was paying for her sins. She had

been living this hell over and over again.

Ling continued walking thoughtlessly and just as

she was about to reach home, she heard someone

call her. “Ling! Over here!” yelled Sam and he waved

to get her attention, “God, I’ve missed you!” he

exclaimed as he wrapped his arms around her.

“How’s little bao?” he asked as he bent down and

put his ears at her tummy.
