Selfcare for students

Hello world. Honestly I recently got sick, but I’m feeling better now. It’s just, I get sick but not like fever but it’s a pain at the bottom of my lungs and I feel better only after medication of Simeticone. Which (I don’t know if this is intentional of the Antiflatulent )allows me to vomit then sleep the whole night with ease. Every time I get sick, I realise how important is Self care and valuing my physical and mental health.

Self care refers to activities and practices that can help you to reduce your stress and enhance your over all well being : essentially, proactively taking care of yourself. Self care is essential in life, in order to be successful in and out the classroom.

School can be equally exciting and stressful. One way to manage the constant ups and downs of life in school is to practice self care, simple activities that can help reduce stress and enhance your quality of life. Research shows that, in addition to keeping yourself healthy even in little ways, can also improve your over all wellbeing.

Top 9 things for a student’s self care

1. Eat a hearty breakfast.

2. Have a stable sleep schedule.

3. Have a regular exercise routine.

4. Set realistic goals.

5. Practice self acceptance and meditate.

6. Take multivitamins or food supplements.

7. Socialise.

8. When you’re sick you’re sick.

9. Journal.

Eat a hearty breakfast

- This goes with all your meals. Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day. Eating breakfast doesn’t mean grabbing a cup of coffee and I’m on my way. No, when I say eat breakfast have a hearty meal. Abundant, rich or flavourful enough to satisfy the appetite and more importantly yourself. Eating a hearty breakfast fills me up. It gives me the energy I need. It won’t starve me when I’m studying and when I’m at school. Based on my personal experiences, going somewhere may it be school or work, without a meal the whole time you’ll feel peckish or sluggish. Thus, you won’t get the things you need done. Always , don’t eat too much and don’t eat too little and that eating a nutritious breakfast doesn’t need to be expensive. You can keep it on a budget.

Have a stable sleep schedule

- Sleep is like your phone being charged. If your phone is not charged it won’t function properly or won’t function at all.

Personal Experience:

I a going a time without proper sleep. I had plenty on my list, my computer easy and presentation, my Mathematics project and my AP glossary portfolio. The best part, I kept it from my parents because they kept telling me that I worked too hard. I spend 8 hours and 45 minutes at school, more or less everyday. I wake up at 4:45 am. That time I was so tired I thought I would collapse any second. I took the liberty to nap at my English class, and my teacher understood why. ( my temperature was rising and I couldn’t write properly) My adviser, ( who doesn’t exactly “like” me ) excused me from my sweepers ( the sweepers are students who take turns in cleaning the classroom) but I had to sweep twice in the week. A friend of mine was kind enough to escort me to my doorstep and the minute I got to my room I went straight away to my bed and fell asleep right away with my uniform and jacket still on.

I learned three things from the experience, that just do things the way they should or you’ll get double the work and more importantly rest and relaxation is a part of work. Overworking yourself is not healthy.

If you’re having problems with sleep, there are applications that can help. For example I used Wysa, which is an online therapist. For sleep problems I recommend:

1. Calm: Meditation and Sleep

2. Headspace

3. Relax Melodies: Sleep sounds

Have a regular exercise routine

- When I wake up 4:45, the first thing I do is stretch because later the day, I won’t have time for it and stretching in the morning helps me prevent stiffness. Exercising can help decrease stress levels. If your in college, you should have unlimited access to the gym on you school campus. Other than the gym you can integrate other fitness activities such as kickboxing and etc. Personally I recommend yoga, ridding a bike and running.

Now I have persuade you to exercise. The questions are “ how do I exercise?” or “ how do I exercise when I don’t feel like it?”

For the first question, how do I exercise?

The main thing, you want to keep it simple and start small. For example, On May 1st I’ll be doing basic warm ups and stretches, I’ll be walking a quarter mile and weeks later I’ll jog the full mile and keep the process going.

For question number two, how could I exercise when I don’t feel like it? So you need motivation or just probably lazy. You’re reading the right post. This may sound rather odd, but basically you want to make work easier and being lazy harder. Try to feel guilty when you’re lazy and feel happy when working. Reward yourself, cuddle with pets when working so you won’t feel alone.

Set realistic goals

- setting yourself goals is important, it’s like small steps to improve yourself. Some people have problems in making goals. Some people are overly ambitious in the wrong mindset. When you’re a student whose overly ambitious, that cannot achieve everything on your list, whose very dedicated and believed so much you can do everything but can’t. You have to accept reality. The truth hurts sometimes but it’s better than a life full of lies. Don’t say “ I’ll speak fluent Russian, German, Spanish and French in two days.” That would be brilliant once you achieve it but the odds of it, you have to forget your limitations and it’s hardly realistic. Give your goals time to process, keep it simple and be realistic but this does not mean you should stop being positive.

To set goals, you must be positive and dedicated. To set realistic goals, you must first realise reality , then accept your limits and be serious. When you set goals that aren’t realistic, they could be impossible to achieve thus less do-able. Realistic goals are more achievable, your hopes won’t get too far high and personally it gives you a positive attitude and a happy ending once you achieve them.

Practice self appreciation and meditate

- You can’t love others, when you don’t love yourself. Loving others when you don’t love yourself is like giving your life in an unhealthy way. Loving yourself starts with appreciation. I made a lot of mistakes that always kept me thinking. Now I appreciate my mistakes because they thought me a lot of things. Think about this, if you didn’t made those mistakes where would you potentially be? Would you be happy? and important would you learn anything? If the mistakes you did, made you a fool and if you completely regret them,” Welcome to the human race! If you were perfect, you’d had to be an angel.”

One way of appreciating yourself, is to stop looking in the negative side of yourself and start looking at your great qualities. Find something unique about yourself you’d like.

Meditation is very important for your mental health, at least it is for me. I practiced self- meditation since I was 10. So what I do, I closed my eyes blocked out every noise, every thought, all the criticism I had and I lay down if possible. I go back to the happiest days of my life. After 5 minutes or so, I feel rejuvenated and whatever comes in my way it keeps me smiling and positive.

Take multivitamins or food supplements

- I had mentioned at the top to eat nutritious meals. I also recommend to take multivitamins or food supplements everyday. Every morning, after breakfast I take both of them for as long as I could . ( Thank you Family)

Taking multivitamins helps to boast your immune system and resistance. I take my daily ascorbic acid and CM-Glucan and it helped me so much. Sometimes, it’s the little things that matter. I recommend you to take multivitamins too.

Socialize

-Having friends is very lovely. But, somethings could make or break you.

I have a best friend, she is one of the best things in my life. In fact, she wasn’t just my best friend she was my first friend. We met in an office where our fathers work. She taught me the best things in life happen unexpectedly and true friendship is the one boat that never sinks.

I have to it not all of my friend ships were a success. My friend ship with a pretty female 9th grader ended up getting my parents involved. The whole thing was horrible, if you knew the things she did you’d go basilisk. She lied to me, frequently goes to my house, tells me I should be absent in my classes often so that I could relax and she stood me up I her depth, which I had to pay. I was completely embarrassed by my whole school, my teachers and my whole Barangay. Until today, she’ll call 2-4 times a week saying she has dengue then pneumonia then a surgery in the appendix. She’ll say she has been in the hospital for two weeks, her mommy went to Canada to pay the bill and she’s been with her friends the whole time. That lying git! She didn’t think I was smart enough to see her scheme. Even mom was basilisk about it. I’m telling you this because I learned a lot of things from her. I was a good friend to her I lend her my books and even did her homework but what did she do? I learned it from the hard way. You can’t trust everyone you see, you have to be careful in the friends you chose and block out friend ships like these (mom blocked her from our phones).

You have to be careful in the friends you chose. Some people, especially children are influence with the people around them. If you have problems having friends I recommend you read : ‘Making Friends, a guide you getting along with people. ‘ written and illustrated by Andrew Matthews, author of the international bestseller ‘Being Happy’ It will teach plenty of things about friendships and how to say no. It’s also very funny.

When you’re sick you’re sick

- I’m one of those people who says being sick is not an excuse to stop school. Because I was in the mindset for it. Either way when I’m very sick I have to rest or the teacher will tell me to.

Also I implore you all to practice good hygiene especially when you’re sick, so you won’t spread the germs.

If you’re a student who hates being away from school for a reason (because I might fail), what you want to do is have a trusted friend to tell you the school’s work. That way you can be productive while being sick. Just not to out do yourself. Think about this “If I don’t feel better soon, I’ll be sick longer thus, being away from school longer.”

Journal

- My last tip for you is to journal. A journal is a book that you write your thoughts and experiences. If you write about very private things what you want to do is have a diary.

A trick I learned from my 3rd grade science teacher, is when you’re mad at someone you take a piece of paper and write every single thing you wish to say to him/her. This helps get your anger out and you won’t end up hitting your frustrations to some else.

You can go for a classic journal which is the notebook- kind, but if you’re artsy and creative go for a bullet journal. A bullet journal is a book with dots, from those dots you can draw your day, place pictures, kind of like a scrapbook.
