The darkness was suffocating. The inky blackness that consumed the room without consent scared child that laid deep inside the sheets. Their heart was pounding in their ears and they could feel the blood rushing through their head as they began to panic. They'd never been a fan of the dark, always having a great fear of the mystery that hid inside when no one was looking. The night was always hardest for them, time when the natural light of the sun had gone away and left them with nothing.

They were shivering, upset by the lack of light their room provided to them. Then came the soft sound of shuffling as the second figure in the room tiredly slipped from their own bed and headed for the others. The steps were soft and padded due to fur and slippers but they still turned the small human into a bubbling pot of fear. They were in panic under their heavy blankets and could barely breathe but slowly the suffocating dark of their blankets were lifted and a figure climbed into bed and hugged them softly. The feeling of it snapped them out of their mind rather quickly and they sighed.

“You don't have to help me, I can do fine on my own..”

They muttered sourly, though they were very grateful for the one around them. It gave them warmth and comfort their blankets never did provide.

“Chara, you know that's a lie. I'm happy to help you when you're scared.. You know that..”

The other said in a tired voice, nuzzling into their sibling and hugging them close to benefit them both.

“Alright, Asriel.. I'll try to that next time..”

“We both know you won't.”

The two young siblings shared a soft and exhausted laugh before deciding it was much past their bedtime. They slowly fell asleep, Asriel hugging Chara gently and Chara finally not feeling the suffocation of the dark with the bright monster on their back protecting them.

The days flew by into many months and even a year, yet this bed seemed the point of many conversations and important things in the life of these two siblings. Yet, it ended so very soon. Much too quickly.

Another thing happened on that bed, the death of the first fallen human, the fall of a best friend, and the grief of a sibling that had become too much.

Years later, this bed still stood on the exact same floor it always had. though now all those happy times of love and comfort were simply memories and things no one else seemed to recall but the two who stood there every day together. A small yellow flower and the ghost no one ever was able to see. Both there for the same reason yet never speaking a word to each other. They could never truly even try, the small plant oblivious to the existence of the being who always stood by him.

They always came to grieve the sibling they had lost. Always regretting having given the other up so foolishly in search for freedom. It was the mistake, but the bed held them together even after death. It was the one thing that made both of them safer on dark nights, the one thing that helped them through their time together, and the ending point of their family.
