Glossolalia is the divination of speaking in another tongue, or a string of random sylabols, unknown to you in a meditative trance. Mostly used in pentecostal worship, so called speaking in tongues. Some scientists or linguistics say that "speaking in tongues" is just vocal nonsensical noices, science proves that when one speaker in tongues a part of the brain that controls speach shuts down and we loose control. Psychology claims that glossolalia is an abnormal occurance possibly evident in schizophrenia or hysteria.
Glossolalia comes from 2 in greek: glossa meaning tongue or language, and lalô meaning speak or speaking. This word was first used in 1879 by theologian Fredrick William Farrar. The Christian history of this divination was created in the book of Acts in the Bible.
Though obviously Glossolalia has Christian roots, it did nor originally come from Christianity, it was a pagan practice. Shamans and other pagan beliefs have been using trance to speak to spirits is an ancient practice with whom George B. Cutten says “Glossolalia is practiced among non-Christian religions: the Peyote cult among the North American Indians, the Haida Indians of the Pacific Northwest, Shamans in the Sudan, the Shango cult of the West Coast of Africa, the Shago cult in Trinidad, the Voodoo cult in Haiti, the Aborigines of South America and Australia, the Eskimos of the subarctic regions of North America and Asia, the Shamans in Greenland, the Dyaks of Borneo, the Zor cult of Ethiopia, the Siberian shamans, the Chaco Indians of South America, the Curanderos of the Andes, the Kinka in the African Sudan, the Thonga shamans of Africa, and the Tibetan monks.”
Trance is a state of mind that is half conscious noted by its lack of response of external stimuli usually put into play by meditation or hypnosis. There are lots of ways to enter trance as it's similar to meditation, some believe it to be the same. I do trance by doing deep breathing, I disassociate myself from what's happening around me then boom trance commenced.
To do glossolalia when one enters a transic state they shut a part of themselves off and free the mouth. It may cone across as a human language that you never actually learned or random sylabols. Glossolalia is used to communicate with spirits. Not much more is known honestly, but I fully believe that one knows subconsciously what was said as it's important for the speaker to know.
