In witchcraft, a magic wand is a long, pointed tool used for focusing and directing Magick (Hopkins).

Most of us do not grow up practicing magick so we associate the wand as the iconic symbol of Witches in fairy tales and contemporary culture alike. Used in ancient religious and magical rites, the wand came into use in Wiccan ritual through the influence of ceremonial magic (WiccaLiving).

Despite the message portrayed in popular culture, it is not the wand that causes magical transformation, but the practitioner, who charges the wand with personal power and energy (WiccaLiving).

In Wiccan ritual, wands are often used to invoke the Goddess and God, and may be used to draw magical symbols in the air or on the ground. It can also be used to draw the circle within which the ritual or spellwork is performed (WiccaLiving).

I strongly suggest making your own magical tools. That way you can infuse the tool with your own personal energy and power, creating a strong bond between you and your magical tool. This will make your spells all the more powerful (Hopkins).

As far as crafts go, making a magic wand is a lot of fun, and will probably make you feel like a kid again. If you’re looking for a fun way to spend an evening, wand-making is a wonderful activity to do (Hopkins).

Wands can be any length under 12 inches or so, and can be made of various materials. There are some very beautiful wands available at Wiccan or “New Age” shops made from glass or pewter, with ornate carvings and crystal points affixed to the ends, and even short wands made from a narrow length of polished gemstone (WiccaLiving).

However, wands are traditionally made of wood, especially from oak, hazel, elder, and willow trees. Many Wiccans prefer their wands to be as close to Nature as possible. You can find these more “rustic” wands available for purchase as well, but it’s also a great idea to go out and find your own (WiccaLiving)!

Wooden wands are most common, durable, and easy to decorate but feel free to use any other materials you think would work for your wand (Hopkins). If you’re using wood and you have access to a wooded area, or even just a tree in your backyard, you can venture out with your sixth sense sharpened and ready to sense just the tree, and just the branch, where your wand is waiting for you. Keep an eye out for fallen branches or twigs on the ground around the tree, as it’s preferable to harvest them that way, rather than cutting into a living tree(WiccaLiving).

Trust your intuition when selecting a wand. If you do feel called to gather a live branch, ask permission from the tree and wait until you feel an affirmative response from your higher self. This is very important. If this doesn’t happen or you get a negative feeling, move on to a different tree (WiccaLiving). When you pick it up, notice how it feels in your hand. Does it fit comfortably in your grip? Does it have an appealing kind of energy to it? What drew you to that particular piece of wood? Check your local laws to make sure you’re allowed to remove wood from your area. to thank the trees in that space for providing you with wood (Hopkins).

As a magick practicing pagan who does not fit into mainstream paths, like wicca or heathenry, in the traditional sense; I use crystal wands that I wrap myself and are capable of holding large stores of energy, to carry magickal energy with me at all times. When I wrap my wands I dedicate great focus and positive intent to channel the best energy into the tool. My pendant wands undeniable power.

I always wear my pendants, That way I can jump into action, and do a quick spell, whenever an occasion presents itself.
