Líf And Thrasír | Who Are They?

When I created my April Fools post, I never expected people to actually want me to create a legitimate version, but since some of you wanted to know more about Líf and Thrasír’s character origins I decided that I would sit down and write this blog out for you all!

So who are Líf and Thrasír?

Líf and Thrasír in FEH are generals of Hel’s army of the dead. Prior to their deaths, they were the first rulers of Askr and Embla respectively, and while they are now dead, they both seem to retain memory of who they were in life, as seen when Líf interacts with Alphonse. This however, is the extent of our knowledge of their past, currently.

Norse Myth

In Norse Mythology, after the rebirth of world following Ragnarok, almost all of the human race is killed in the destruction, lots of the old gods have perished, and the new sun rises on a planet cleansed of its evils. As I said, almost all of the human race is gone, all except two humans. These humans are called Líf (a name identical to the Norse noun for “Life, the life of the body”) and Lífþrasir (basically meaning “Lover Of Líf”, however this is the basic meaning). These two humans are said to be the sole human survivors of Ragnarok, and do so by taking refuge in Hoddmímis holt (or possibly the World Tree, Yggdrasil) to live through the three winters of Fimbulvetr, and after the flames of Surtr have subsided they will emerge and repopulate the new Earth together.

What Does This Mean?

Now, all of this might have you confused, but I will break down the basics of their Myth and do my best to apply it to Líf and Thrasír’s characters in FEH.

This myth of Líf and Lífþrasir being the survivors of Ragnarok could mean that prior to their formation of Askr and Embla, there may have been an extinction scale event, possibly caused by the dragons that share the name of their kingdoms, as we learnt of their existence from Bruno in the closing chapter of this years Easter Tempest Trials “Defy The Gods” (I am pretty sure this was the first time they were directly referred to, please correct me if I’m wrong). It also s the theory that these two rulers were also lovers in life, which gives sense to why the kingdoms of Askr and Embla are so closely linked with one another.

I’ve also been thinking about how they may have been given the power of opening gates to other worlds by the gods as a gift for surviving their worlds equivalent of Ragnarok, since there’s a high chance the two of them may have consulted the gods for guidance, being alone in a world wiped clean of anything that was familiar to them.

My Conclusion

While I do believe that some of the theories I presented here are (hopefully) quite likely to be correct, the fact still remains that their myth takes place after Ragnarok has ended and would’ve happened a long time ago in FEHs historical timeline, but Book 2 took its inspiration from the events at the start of Ragnarok and has only just occurred. Unless I.S. just decided to screw the chronological order of the Mythos, then there is gonna need to be some explaining to do about Líf, Thrasír, their past, and how they came to found Askr and Embla.
