Bats for nearly 20%

of all classified mammal species

in the world with over 1,200

species. This makes them the

second largest order of

mammals.

Almost all bats are insectivores

or frugivores (meaning nearly

all bats eat either fruit or

insects). Few bat species feed on

mammals.

Most bat species are nocturnal

and roost in caves and other

places like foliage and hollows.

While many bats live in colonies,

some of up to a million bats,

other bat species live solitary lives.

Yes, I have seen many bats. I

see them every single night

during the warm seasons and

they often get inside my house.

As pretty as they are, catch and

release missions for bats are not

fun!

Bats are my favorite animals

for a variety of reasons.

They are beautiful, unique

creatures.

Bats are great pollinators

and extremely useful for

clearing the air of mosquitos.

I love bats because they

remind me of my childhood

and late night walks in the

spring and summer.

Bats are main characters

in a couple of my favorite

movies from childhood.

Bartok in Anastasia and

Batty Koda in FernGully.

✤ Bats are the only mammal

that can really fly (mammals like

sugar gliders and flying squirrels

are able to glide, but not fly).

Their wings resemble hands with

skin stretched between long

fingers.

✤ There are over 1,400

species of bats and they can

be found everywhere in the

world except for extremes

desert and polar regions.

✤ More than 500 species

or fruit depends on bats for

pollination. Bats spread fruit

seeds. Without them we

wouldn’t have plant species

that produce bananas, mangos

and agave.

✤ Research on bats has led

to medical advances such as

vaccines. Studying how bats

use echolocation helps

scientists develop navigational

aids for the blind.

✤ Bats have few natural

predators. Their biggest threat

is disease. More than 6 million

bats have died from the fungal

disease White-Nose Syndrome

alone.

✤ Bats are prehistoric and have

existed for more than 35

million years. That’s a lot

of history in their bones!
